(TSR) The full 12-weapon complement of a self-propelled (SP) heavy artillery battalion was seen at Gorokhovets Artillery Training Center in the USSR on (Figure 1). This is the first time that a full 12-weapon complement of a SP heavy artillery battalion has been observed in the Soviet Union. This battalion and major elements of a SP heavy mortar battalion were parked in a bivouac area situated at 56-18-50N 042-49-25E. The artillery and mortar battalions were equipped with 12 203mm SP guns M-1975, formerly the Leningrad SP gun (Figure 2), and at least ten 240mm SP mortars M-1977 (Figure 3), respectively. Other equipment in the bivouac area included ten armored command and reconnaissance vehicles (ACRV) M-1974, four POL trucks, and 64 tents with the capacity to house approximately 250 troops. both weapons were seen in the same bivouac area but not at battalion strength. Equipment included four 203mm SP guns M-1975, five 240mm SP mortars M-1977, and ten ACRVs M-1974. The parking pattern of the weapons on these two dates indicates that each battalion was probably organized into three four-weapon firing batteries. This Table of Organization and Equipment (TO&E) configuration is identical to towed heavy artillery and mortar battalions.' 3. (TSR) The presence of these two weapons together in a training environment at both battalion and lesser strength suggests that the combined employment of these weapons in a tactical situation is a possibility. It also suggests that Soviet heavy artillery brigades may be organized into two regiments, each containing one heavy artillery battalion and one heavy mortar battalion. The presently accepted TO&E for Soviet heavy artillery brigades is two battalions of each weapon with no regimental structure.' DOCUMENT 1. DIA.
