1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: ARMAMENT IS NOW IDENTIFIED ON THE
MANGALIA-J. THE ARMAMENT AND THE BLUNT BOW OF THE SHIP SUGGEST
THAT ITS FUNCTION WILL BE AS A RIVER MONITOR OR POSSIBLY A
PERSONNEL LANDING CRAFT WITH FIRE SUPPORT CAPABILITY.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: THE MANGALIA-J, WHICH IS FITTING OUT HERE, HAS
BEEN EQUIPPED WITH A PROBABLE TANK TURRET SIMILAR TO A JS-3
HEAVY TANK TURRET. NO SUPERSTRUCTURE IS DISCERNIBLE, AND THE
PRESENCE OF A FORWARD TURRET AT THIS EARLY STATE OF OUTFITTING
SUGGESTS THAT IT MAY BE A TRIAL FIT. IN ADDITION, AN
UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT HAS BEEN MOUNTED ON THE AFTER PROBABLE
WEAPONS POSITION.
(S/D) THE MANGALIA-J WAS LAID DOWN BYI, AND LAUNCHED 25X1
APPROXIMATELY 43 METERS LONG AND 8 METERS IN BEAM.
(S/D) APPROXIMATELY 50 PERCENT OF ROMANIA'S BORDERS ARE RIVERS
AND A NUMBER OF ITS EXISTING NAVAL UNITS WERE CONSTRUCTED AND
EQUIPPED FOR RIVERINE OPERATIONS.
