PROBABLE SPACE-RELATED TEST AREA UNDER CONSTRUCTION
ZAGORSK MISSILE AND SPACE DEVELOPMENT N R, USSR
1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: A NEW PROBABLE SPACE-RELATED TEST FACILITY
IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT ZAGORSK MISSILE AND SPACE DEVELOPMENT
CENTER.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: A LARGE, CLEARED AREA ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE
FACILITY ON AINS A CIRCULAR STRUCTURE, WITH AN APPROXIMATELY
22-METER OUTER DIAMETER AND A 17-METER INNER DIAMETER. SEVEN
TRENCHES RADIATE FROM THIS CIRCULAR STRUCTURE, PRESENTING A
SPOKE-LIKE APPEARANCE. EACH OF THE SEVEN TRENCHES DIVIDES INTO
THREE SEPARATE TRENCHES MIDWAY FROM THE CIRCULAR STRUCTURE..
THE APPROXIMATE DIAMETER OF THE TEST FACILITY IS 180 METERS. A
SUPPORT BUILDING UNDER CONSTRUCTION OUTSIDE THE RADIAL TRENCHES
IS CONNECTED TO THE CIRCULAR STRUCTURE BY AN UNDERGROUND
CONDUIT. A CONSTRUCTION SUPPORT CAMP IS ADJACENT TO THE TEST
FACILITY. CONSTRUCTION HAD BEGUN AS EARLY
ZAGORSK HAS BEEN INVOLVED
IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF COMPONENTS FOR SOVIET SPACE
SYSTEMS. ALTHOUGH THE FUNCTION OF THIS FACILITY IS UNKNOWN,
THE LOCATION AND TIMING OF THIS CONSTRUCTION SUGGESTS THAT THIS
TEST FACILITY MAY BE INVOLVED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOME ASPECT
OF A NEW SOVIET SPACE LAUNCH SYSTEM.
