This report describes the status of Iraqi militar facilities in the Kurdistan region of Iraq during the period It includes a description of 25X1 major Iraqi military facilities, a map showing the location of these facilities, a table summarizing the ground forces deployed in the Kurdistan region during this period, and photographs of selected installations. 2. During the period eight permanent-type 25X1 barracks areas and 21 occupied semipermanent military camps were identified in the Kurdistan region of Iraq (Figure 1). A total of 98 tanks or assault guns, 47 armored personnel carriers, 124 field artillery pieces or mortars, and numerous other vehicles were observed in these installations (Table 1). 3. Transistory ground force concentrations, convoys, airfields, and air-associated activity are not included in this report. INTRODUCTION 4. I ( provided cloud-free photography of fair-to-good interpretability of the 25X1 entire Kurdistan region of Iraq. Western Kurdistan was covered 25X1 Eastern Kurdistan and the northern portion of the Iraq-Iran border were 25X1 The central portion of Kurdistan was covered 25X1 his is the first time that the entire Kurdistan region of Iraq 25X1 has been covered on KEYHOLE photography of a scale large enough to identify ground force weapons. 5. Numerous small tent camps, police posts, abandoned military camps, and fortified villages were observed throughout the Kurdistan region but are not included in this report. BASIC DESCRIPTION 6. Eight permanent-type barracks areas have been identified in the Kurdistan region of Iraq (Figure 1 and Table 1). Five of the barracks areas were occupied. Three of the barracks areas were under construction and had not yet been occupied. The following are descriptions of the permanent-type barracks areas: a. Al Mawsil Army Barracks Uhazlani is just south of Al Mawsil 25X1 at 36-18-30N 043-08-12E. It contains 44 administration buildings, 85 barracks, eight messhalls, 40 vehicle storage buildings, 90 storage buildings, over 200 other buildings, and 103 tents. A large training area is just west of the barracks. b. Kirk uk A rmy Barracks Northwes t is ju st northwest of Kirkuk 25X1 at 35-28-25N 04 4-21-50E. As S ulay maniyah Barracks Area is just northwest of As 25X1 Sulaymaniyah at 35-33-52N 045-26-08E. Rawanduz Army Barracks is 1.2 nm northeast of Rawanduz at 36-37-25N 044-32-40E. It contains one probable administration building, one large two-story barracks quadrangle, one vehicle storage building, one revetted explosives storage building, one storage building, over 60 other buildings, and a helicopter pad. The barracks is partially secured by an earth wall containing at least six small bunkers. f. Kirkuk Military Installation Southwest is 2.7 nm south- west of the center of Kirkuk at 35-26-20N 044-20-20E. It contains four probable ad- ministration buildings, nine barracks, two messhalls, and 26 other buildings. All of the buildings were under construction. Construction activity was first observed at this location in July 1972 g. Zakhu Military Barracks West is 1.9 nm west of Zakhu and approximately 2 nm southeast of the Iraq-Turkey border at 37-08-40N 042-38-30E. It contains one administration building under construction, two barracks, five bar- racks under construction, and five other buildings under construction. Construction activity was first observed at this location in July 1972 h. Sarsink Airfield is 1.1 nm south of Bamarni and approximate- ly 43 nm north-northeast of Al Mawsil at 37-05-55N 043-16-14E. A small barracks area containing one probable administration building, two barracks, one support building and 15 tents was identified under construction The barracks area is near the east end of the runway of Sarsink Airfield. 7. Twenty-two occupied semipermanent military camps have been identified in the Kurdistan region of Iraq (Figure 1 and Table 1). The following are descriptions of those camps: a. Quraitu Military Camp is on a hilltop just east of Quraitu and 16.9 nm north-northeast of Khanaqin at 34-36-30N 045-30-05E. The camp is se- cured by an earth wall and contains at least 33 sheds, 11 tents, and numerous small bunkers and vehicle revetments. h. Maydan Military Camp is on the west bank of the Diyala River 1.1 nm northwest of Maydan and 40.1 nm north-northeast of Khanaqin at 34- 55-OON 045-36-55E. The camp is partially secured by an earth wall and contains at least 40 sheds, 67 tents, nine field artillery positions, and numerous revetments. c. Derbenki Khan Military Camp is 30.5 nm south-southeast of As Sulaymaniyah and 1.0 nm west-southwest of the Darband-I Khan Dam at 35- 06-25N 045-41-OOE. It is partially secured by an earth wall and contains three prob- able administration buildings, 22 officers/dependents quarters buildings, 17 other buildings, at least 50 sheds, 80 tents, eight field artillery positions, and a guard tow- er. An unsecured six-gun AAA site was observed on a hilltop approximately 1 nm north- east of the camp. The camp and the Darband-I Khan Dam are shown in Figure 2. d. Savvid Sadiq Military Camp is just southwest of Sayyid Sadiq and 24 nm southeast of As Sulaymaniyah at 35-21-ION 045-51-30E. It is secured by an earth wall and contains one storage building, at least 80 sheds, three tents, and 12 field artillery positions. e. As Sulaymaniyah Military Camp West 's 3.8 nm west-north- west of As Sulaymaniyah at 35-34-50N 045-21-OOE. The camp is partially secured and contains 56 sheds, 29 tents, and six field artillery positions. f. Kani Miran Military Camp is 1.3 nm southeast of Kani Mi- ran and 20.3 nm northwest of As Sulaymaniyah at 35-46-40N 045-07-30E. It is secured by an earth wall and contains 23 sheds. The camp is shown in Figure 3. g. Dukan Military Camp is on the crest of a ridge 1.0 nm north- east of Dukan and 39.9 nm northeast of Kirkuk at 35-56-20N 044-58-OOE. The camp is secured by a wall and contains three probable administration buildings, at least 50 sheds, 19 tents, six field artillery positions, and a helicopter pad. Sarsiyan Military Camp is on the north edge of the Dukan 25X1 Reservoir, 1.7 nm west-northwest of Sarsiyan and 45.7 nm east of Irbil at 36-13-OON 044-12-20E. The camp is secured by a wall and contains one administration building, at least 70 sheds, and four field artillery positions. i. Kuysanjaq Military Barracks Area is 1.2 nm northeast of Kuy- 25X1 sanjaq and approximately 28 nm east-southeast of Irbil at 36-06-13N 044-38-56E. It is partially secured and contains at least 40 sheds and numerous trenches. j. Dibs Military Camp is just north of Dibs and 21 nm north- 25X1 west of Kirkuk at 35-41-25N 044-03-55E. It is partially secured and contains three prob- able administration buildings, one storage building, 17 sheds, and 21 tents. k. Shaqlawah Military Camp is 0.8 nm northwest of Shaqlawah 25X1 and 20.6 nm northeast of Irbil at 36-24-20N 044-19-10E. It is partially secured by a wall and contains at least 55 sheds and six field artillery positions. 1. Golak Military Camp is 1 nm north of Golak and 11.6 nm 25X1 west of Rawanduz at 36-37-OON 044-19-10E. It is secured by a wall and contains one administration/barracks quadrangle, at least 50 sheds, and five tents. m. Julamarg Military Camp is 6.0 nm north of Julamarg 25X1 and 31.8 nm northeast of Irbil at 36-36-40N 044-24-10E. It is secured by a wall and contains a police post, one storage building, at least 40 sheds, 15 tents, and six field artillery positions. n. Balikiyan Military Camp is 0.5 nm south-southeast of 25X1 Balikiyan and 2.6 nm northwest of Rawanduz at 36-39-ION 044-30-15E. It is secured by a wall and contains at least 24 sheds, 17 tents, six field artillery positions, and numerous vehicle revetments. o. S'hiwa Troop Concentration is 2.5 nm southwest of Shiwa 25X1 and just west of the point where the Al Mawsil-Aqrah Highway crosses the Nahr Al Khazir (River) at 36-29-59N 043-31-28E. It is partially secured by a wall and contains 12 sheds, 99 tents, and six field artillery positions. p. Agrah Barracks Area is 1 nm south of Aqrah and 34 nm north- 25X1 northwest of Irbil at 36-44-40N 043-53-20E. It is wall-secured and contains two admin- istration buildings, three barracks, 29 quonset-type storage buildings, two other build- ings, at least 30 sheds and 35 tents, six field artillery positions, and a helicopter pad. q. Hashtkuh Military Camp is 1.1 nm northeast of Hashtkuh 25X1 and 4.6 nm east-northeast of Aqrah at 36-47-40N 043-59-OOE. It is secured by a wall and contains one police post, one probable barracks with two central courtyards, four other buildings, at least 35 sheds, 44 tents, and three field artillery positions. r. Dahuk Barracks Area is 1.2 nm southwest of Dahuk and 33 25X1 nm north of Al Mawsil at 36-51-18N 042-59-36E. It is secured by a wall and contains one probable administration building, at least 35 sheds, six field artillery positions, and a helicopter pad. s. Zakhu Military Barracks Area is just west of Zakhu, and 25X1 51 nm north-northwest of Al Mawsil, and approximately 5.4 nm east of the Iraq- Turkey border at 37-08-40N 042-40-39E. It is secured by a wall and contains one large administration building under construction, at least 30 sheds, 19 tents, and six field artillery positions. The barracks are shown in Figure 5. t. Avn Zalah Military Area is 34.6 nm northwest of Al Mawsil 25X1 at 36-44-20N 042-36-OOE. a tent camp was identified 1.9 nm south 25X1 of this area. It contained 148 tents and seven field artillery positions. u. Sinjar Military Camp is 61.5 nm west of Al Mawsil at 36- 25X1 18-30N 041-49-OOE. It consists of a permanent-type barracks area under construction and a semipermanent military camp. The barracks area is secured by a fence and con- tains 33 barracks and four support buildings. The military camp is not secured and contains at least 50 sheds and 31 tents. The barracks area and the camp are shown in Figure 6.
