CURRENT SUMMARY OF SOVIET MRBM LAUNCH AREAS

This report presents a current summary of deployed MRBM launch
areas in the USSR identified on KEYHOLE photography as of
(Table 1). It supersedes NPIC/B-27/61. 1/
The total number of MRBM launch areas in the USSR identified to date
is now 72, with a total of 288 pads, referenced to 44 separate locations.*
Each area has 4 pads. Tho total of 72 includes 65 firm launch areas refer-
enced to 38 locations, 5 probable launch areas referenced to 4 locations,
and 2 possible launch areas referenced to 2 locations. Of the 72 launch
areas, 56 are deployed in pairs, forming 28 launch complexes. Cloud
cover precludes positive determination of pairing at. most of the other 16
launch areas.
Continued analysis and additional coverage of the MRBM. areas has
resulted in the following changes in identification: (1) the previously
designated "area of probable missile-related activity" at 55-35-OON
28-16-OOE, 16- nautical miles northwest of Polotsk 2/, has been identified
as an MRBM launch area and is now referenced to Disna; (2) the launch
area previously referenced to Shishchitsy is now referenced to Gresk;
and (3) the launch area previously referenced to Vepriai is now referenced
to Ukmerge.
In the "Coordinates" column of the table, minor differences from
previously reported coordinates result from a replotting of all MRBM
launch areas on appropriate AMS series (scale 1:250,000) maps. These
coordinates are considered to be the most accurate to date.
In general, the Air Force concurs in this report except for the procedure used in naming of the
launch areas, which is not in consonance with the TDI naming procedure.
