This report provides a basic description of 53 border outposts, four of which are considered probable and 26 are considered possible outposts; 24 possible border support camps; and three military installations along the China- Mongolia border. Text, an annotated location map, a table of facilities, and three photographs are included. 2. The installations listed in this report were identified on photography of poor-to-good interpretability. However, photography did not afford a com- plete analysis of some of the installations because of poor resolution or the lack of adequate coverage. 3. Two previous reports covering the western China-USSR border area and the Ussuri-Amur River area have been published.l~2 This report, in conjunction with the existing reports, completes a base line study of the Sino-Soviet and Sino-Mongolian border area. ~+. The outposts, possible support camps, and military installations were observed along the China-Mongolia border (Figure 1). Most of these facilities are small and contain from three to ten buildings each. Exceptions are the military installations at Yuan-hu (item 7, Table 1), Wu-pu-lang (item 27, Table 1), and Er-lin (item ~+5, Table 1). Coverage of the Sino-Mongolian border area during the past two years has shown no evidence of a major buildup either along the border or within the facilities. 5. The major concentrations of these installations are near Yuan-hu (45-14-3oN o90-3o-3oE), Tsun-su-chili (4~+-27-30N 112-~+0-OOE), and Ta-pu-su-miao (45-16-OON 116-30-30E). Most of the border outposts are in remote areas with no standard intervals between them and are usually within 10 miles of the border at crossings such as roads, rivers, and mountain passes or other likely avenues of approach. Most of the possible border support camps and a few probable outposts, however, are more than 10 miles from the border. Because of their proximity to the border and their location along main access routes leading to the border, these installations may be an integral part of the Chinese border defense system. Border outposts or support camps are not observed in some areas. These apparent breaks in the Chinese border defense system are in most cases due to topographical barriers such as the Altai Mountains and the Gobi Desert. Light-to-heavy trenching, strongpoints, observation towers, and security were observed at many of the installations. Access is either by road or trail. Generally, no vehicles or equipment were noted. 6. A listing of installations with geographic coordinates and a description of facilities are shown in Table 1.
