Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/02 : CIA-RDP78T05162A000100010081-1 7 PHOTOGRAPHIC INTERPRETATION REPORT coPii i 8 11 PAGES PIR-024/70 GROUP 1: EXCLUDED FROM AUTOMATIC DOWNGRADING AND DECLASSIFICATION Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/02 : CIA-RDP78T05162A000100010081-1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/02 : CIA-RDP78T05162A000100010081-1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/02 : CIA-RDP78T05162A000100010081-1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/02 : CIA-RDP78T05162A000100010081-1 TOP SECRET RUFF The deployment of Soviet SA-3 missile sites in Egypt is confirmed for the first time on KEYHOLE photography Five sites have been ? identified in the Alexandria (Al Iskandariyah) area and at least three other possible sites are in the early stages of construction. Other significant activity includes the identification of at least 26 T-shaped or linear excavations in various stages of construction. Fifteen are within approximately 20 nautical miles (rim) of the Suez Canal (Quanat As Suways). Some are located near existing SAM sites and they generally resemble guidance areas of certain previously identified SA-2 and SA-3 sites. They will be designated as possible SAM-related facilities. This report includes a location map and two additional maps keyed to a table giving details of the current SAM deployment, as well as a plan view, a perspective drawing, and a photograph of one of the T-shaped excavations. Two other tables also indicate (1) photo verification of SAM activity reported by collateral sources, and (2) the location and current status of the 26 possible SAM-related facilities. A location map (Figure 1) indicates the two regions of SAM deployment in the eastern portion of Egypt. Figures 2 and 3 portray graphically the locations of all known SAM sites, which are numbered to correspond with line item entries in Table 1. The table has been compiled to reflect not only the most current occupancy status of each site, but also to indicate those sites which have been observed to be usually occupied or unoccupied during the past year. In some instances occupancy has varied from time to time. Positive identification of five SA-3 sites and the possibility of at least three others in the early stages of construction confirms numerous collateral reports that SA-3 equipment had been observed in the Cairo (Al Qahirah) and Alexandria areas. Table 2 provides a list of reported SAM installations and indicates those which were confirmed by photography from March 1970. Other significant activity, some of which has occurred near existing SA-2 sites, has been the recent construction of at least 26 T-shaped or linear exca- vations. Because of their general resemblance to guidance areas at certain existing SA-2 and SA-3 sites, they have been designated as possible SAM-related facilities. Some appear similar to the guidance areas at Al Qahirah SA-2 Site (30-o6-15N 030-57-)+5E) and Al Iskandariyah SAM Site B05-2 (31-18-30N 030-03-10E). Their status and locations are cited in Table 3 and they are also included on the- SAM deployment maps (Figures 2 and 3.) A plan view, a perspective drawing, and a photograph of the various T-shaped excavations and the structures within them are included as Figures 4+, 5, and 6. Information for the drawings and mensural data is based solely on collateral sources.
