This report summarizes the major air developments in the Peking Military Region (PMR) A table lists all of the airfields in the PMR, the aircraft count at each airfield on the latest coverage, and units occupying the airfields. The report also contains a location map and three photographs. 2. several important developments were observed at airfields in the PMR (Figure 1 and Table 1). Significant changes in aircraft order-of-battle (AOB) were noted at seven airfields, new construction activity was observed at three airfields, and surface-to-air missile-(SAM) and cruise-missile-related activity was evidenced at three airfields. Aircraft Deployments 3. Three FARMER and three FRESCO were observed at Ta-tung/Ching-shui-ho Airfield (item 9, Figure 1 and Table 1) in June 1974, which was the first observation of fighters at this field since 1966. The fighters were not present on subsequent coverage in October 1974, indicating that they were probably either in transit or temporarily assigned to the airbase. 4. Elements of a fighter/bomber regiment of FANTAN A were observed at Ling-chiu Airfield (item 10) for the first time in November 1974. The FANTAN A aircraft were presen~ rid are probably permanently assigned here. The field now houses one fighter and one fig ter/ omber regiment. 5. Six FISHBED were identified at Chang-chia-kou Airfield Southeast (item 11) in November 1974. This was the first time since March 1973 that FISHBED have been sighted there. A corresponding decrease in FISHBED was noted at Yung-ning Airfield (item 15), where a small detachment of eight FISHBED had been stationed. A regiment of FARMER aircraft was also sighted at Chang-chia-kou in November 1974. Twenty-two FARMER were present on 1 November 1974. This is the highest count of FARMER observed here since October 1973, when two FARMER were sighted. 6. Two FISHBED were observed at Tung-hsien-chung Airfield (item 24) for the first time This sighting of FISHBED corresponds in time to the probable redeployment of the six FISHBED from Yung-ning to Chang-chia-kou Southeast and may be related. FARMER aircraft at Tung-hsien-chuang had decreased to 49 from a previous high of 65 7. Between August and November 1974, shortly after the FISHBED detachment had left Yung-ning Airfield, a regiment of FARMER was deployed to Yung-ning. A total of 26 FARMER were observed there for the first time 8. Since the initial delivery of Soviet CURL (AN-26) aircraft to China in mid-1974, the CURL has been sighted at three airfields in the PMR. Two CURL were seen at Pi-ko-chi Airfield (item 7) in late October 1974 and three CURL were seen at Liang-hsiang Airfield (item 13) in November. The three CURL at Liang-hsiang have been observed regularly and are probably assigned there with two COKE (AN-24). The bort numbers on the wings of the CURL have been identified as 744, 745, and probably 748. One CURL was identified in November 1974 at Pei-ching Airfield Capital (item 17), where new aircraft from foreign manufacturers are usually delivered. This aircraft has been observed in the aircraft maintenance area at this field since its initial sighting. -1- Top Secret 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/07/14: CIA-RDP78T05162A000400010096-2 TABLEV- S C4( ?L g p ipIC 5-1081 FIGURE 1. A French Super Frelon helicopter was sighted at Liang-hsiang Airfield in January 1975. Only on ' known to exist in China and it was sighted one other time at Ching-te-chen Airfield in southeast China in August 1974. 10. New construction activity was noted at three airfields in the PMR during the reporting period. A new runway paralleling the existing main runway, but west of the support facilities, was under construction at Pei-ching Airfield Capital (Figure 2). The new runway was in the early stage of construction, with only the initial scarring under way. No end points were visible, but the scarring was approximately 11,765 by 775 feet*. Actual construction began after June 1974, although preparations for the supporting construction camps and rail spur were evident earlier. The airfield remains operational since the construction of the new runway does not interfere with existing facilities. 11. New construction was observed at Pei-thing/Nan-yuan Airfield (item 19; Figure 3), adjacent to the Pei-ching/Nan-yuan Guided Missile Airframe Plant . The runway was being extended at the south end to approximately 10,590 by 200 feet*. New ladder-type parking aprons were also being added, and the existing runway was being resurfaced. When observed the transport aircraft usually stationed there had been removed and the runway was unserviceable. This construction activity was new since June 1974. 12. Construction also was observed at Tien-thing/Chang-kuei-chuang Airfield (item 29; Figure 4). The runway was being extended at both ends to approximately 10,655 by 205 feet*. New end connecting links and taxiways were being added to the runway extensions, and the existing runway was being resurfaced. The runway was unserviceable and no aircraft were observed when the field was covered This construction began between November 1973 and June 1974. Missile Activity 13. A four-pncitiun field-rlenlnvecl CSA-1 site was identified at Shih-chia-chuang/Ta-kuo-tsun Airfield (item 39)L_ Also, one CSA-1 missile transporter was sighted near the north end of the runway at ieng e it ie (item 23) in August 1974. The transporter was not present on later coverage. 14. Cruise-missile equipment was identified at Liang-hsiang Airfield in November 1974. Six cruise-missile transporters and several other pieces of cruise-missile-associated equipment were sighted in November 1974, with a high count of 12 transporters seen in January 1975. The transporters and other equipment were not observed -4- Top Secret 25X1 25X1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/07/14: CIA-RDP78TO5162A000400010096-2 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011107114: CIA-RDP78T05162A000400010096-2 Q Next 2 Page(s) In Document Denied Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011107114: CIA-RDP78T05162A000400010096-2 1 1 1 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/07/14: CIA-RDP78TO5162A000400010096-2 Top Secret RUFF - 8 - 25X1 Top Secret Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/07/14: CIA-RDP78TO5162A000400010096-2 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/07/14: CIA-RDP78TO5162A000400010096-2 Top Secret Top Secret Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/07/14: CIA-RDP78TO5162AO00400010096-2
