CONSTRUCTION STATUS OF THE TAN-ZAM (GREAT UHURU) RAILROAD
1. This report describes the construction status of the Tan-Zam Railroad in both Tanzania
and Zambia (Figure 1) based on photography and updates a prcvious25Xl
published status report that was derived from photography 25X1
The report contains a location map, tables, and four annotated photographs. 25X1
2. ~ shows the completion of the 166-nautical-mile (191-statute-mih25Xl
segment from Makumbako, in the southern highlands, to Tunduma, on the border with Zambia (Figure
2). The entire Tanzanian portion of the rail line from Dar Es Salaam to the Zambian border, a
distance of 466 nautical miles (nm) (536 statute miles), is, therefore, complete and operational. Table
1 provides a partial list of support facilities along the Makumbako-to-Tunduma segment and the
location df these facilities.
3. The bulk of the Zambian portion of the railroad--492 nm (566 statute miles)--consists of
graded roadbed or cleared survey lines. The laying of track within Zambia is apparently in the initial
stage. a mechanical track-laying device (Figure 3) was on the grade approaching25X1
bridge that crosses the Nakonde River approximately 2 rim west of the Tanzanian border. Possible
track was observed in place for approximately 15 nm west of this point.

4. For the purposes of this report the Zambian portion of the rail line has been divided into
the segments listed below. A summary of the progress on each segment follows.
Track Roadbed Survey Total Distance
Tunduma-Kasama 17 nm 101 nm 14 nm 140 nm*
Kasama-Mpika None 55 nm 57 nm 112 nm
Mpika-Kapiri Mposhi None None 240 nm 240 nm
*No photo coverage for a distance of 8 nm.
5. In addition to the track already in place, most of this segment consists of completed roadbed.
A classification yard is under construction just west of the village of Mwenzo, approximately 5 nm
west of the Tanzanian border.
Kasama-Mpika
6. Approximately 50 percent of this segment consists of completed roadbed. The largest bridge
within Zambia is under construction on the Chambeshi River at 09-47-15S 031-40-50E (Figure 4).
The major locomotive and rolling stock repair facility for the rail line in Zambia is also under
construction just west of Mpika (Figure 5).
Mpika-Kapiri Mposhi
7. The longest segment within Zambia consists only of the initial survey line, the initial grading
of roadbed, and the emplacement of culverts. The rail line closely parallels the completed all-weather
Tan-Zam highway to Kapiri Mposhi, where it will join the existing Zambian rail system. Virtually
no work has been done on permanent support facilities along this segment.
8. Table 2 lists some of the support facilities under construction in Zambia, and their locations.
Table 3 is a partial list of bridges under construction in Zambia, and the rivers they cross.
