MEMORANDUM FOR: HENRY A. KISSINGER
FROM: TOM LATIMER
SUBJECT: Suggestion For CIA Debriefing of Key
Members of Presidential Trip to
Peking
The various members of the Presidential party have acquired a
treasury of hitherto unobtainable information and impressions of
people and places in the People's Republic of China. It would be
most helpful for CIA to gather and synthesize such non-substantive
idiormation for the future use of the Executive Branch in its dealings
with China.
CIA could arrange low-key, informal interviews of certain members
of the party. I am certain that there would be no problem in having
CIA submit for review by Winston Lord or whoever you designate
any and all reports resulting from such interviews prior to their
dissemination within the intelligence community.
The following are the people who migh be pat on a list for CIA to contact:
Winston Lord
John Hold ridge
Jon Howe
Dwight Chapin
Ron Walker
Vern Coffey
Tim Elbourne
Gen. Scowcroft
Ron Ziegler (? )
If you approve of this idea, perhaps it might be mentioned to Haldeman
at a morning meeting so that members of the staff would Isskobe taken
by surprise at being contacted by a CIA "agent".
RECOMMENDATION:
That you authorize CIA to begin such interviews with members of
the White House staff.
NSS Review Completed.
