NEWSMEN CONSIDERED MY ACCOLADE FOR BUNKER AT HIS BIRTHDAY
YESTERDAY QUOTE A COMPARISON WITH MR. NIXON. NOT FAVORABLE
TO THE PRESIDENT UNQUOTE. I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I SPOKE ONLY
OF BUNKER'S GREAT DIGNITY, DEDICATED PUBLIC SERVICE AND CONSTANT
INSPIRATION TO US ALL. I DID NOT MENTION THE PRESIDENT DURING.
MY BRIEF TOAST? EXCEPT TO READ A CABLE FROM HIM AT THE END. ANY
COMPARISONS OR INNUENDO WERE SOLELY IN THE HYSTERICAL MINDS OF THE
PRESS AT THE PARTY.

1. 1 have seen that Gwertzman in Sunday's Time states some
newsmen considered my accolade for Bunker at his birthday
yesterday QUOTE a comparison with Mr. Nixon, not favorable
to the President UNQUOTE. I want you to know that I spoke only
of Bunker's great dignity, dedicated public service and constan*T
inspiration to us all. I did not mention the President during my
brief toast, except to read a cable from him at the end. Any
hysterical
comparisons or innuendo were solely in the/minds of the
kyidma6col press at the party.
