current ARVN operation near Kompang Chain.,, recently told
that the mayor VC NVA units an t e area are
increasingly short of znen. The MR III staff estimates that the
VG/NVA regiments in the area average about 700 fighting nzen
plus some support and. specialist elezxa.ents. VG/NVA company
strengths averaged about b5 rxa.en in September, but now average
just aver 50. Replacements are on, the way fraxn North Vi~tnam~
and should reach these units in January, but. they will not be
effectively 9.ntegrated by the time the ARVN launches its dry season
offensive.
On the other hand, munitions and supplies appear to be available to
the VG/NVA units in the Kompong Chain area, In a captured docu-
ment dated December 14, the cornxnander of the 272nd VG Regiment
regv.ested 1, OOQ rounds of $2-.mm. mortar ammunition. Froxxa. the
.wording of the document, the MR ILI staff judges that .the commander
expected this large, requisition to be filled without difficulty.
