. Upon receipt of your message, I called the Chinese on Sunday
and. set up a meeting today,- Monday. After opening pleasantries,
I told the Ambassador that I had another report from you on your
Mid-East mission in the spirit of keeping the Chinese informed on
important international issues. He commented that press reports
indicated that you had made a breakthrough at the end of your trip.
After confirming this, I read him your oral message. He thanked us
and said that he would report immediately to his government.
2. The Ambassador again was amused by the way we were, handling
the Soviet participatton and. commented tlidt-at-mosettiv.U. SI and
Soviet Ambassadors would be witnesses to the formal signing in
Geneva. He noted that the papers suggested that you might be
back on Thursday, and I replied that my personal estimate was
that it was apt to be the weekend before you returned. He noted
that before you left he wished that you would gain new achievements,

and he was happy to see that toward the end you were able to bring
agreement between the two sides. Of course, this agreement was
only a preliminary one and there was still much to be done after
this; as Vice Premier Teng Hsiao-pling had said to you, if Israel
does not withdraw from th'e Golan Heights at the end, Syria will not
agree to it. He added that you had also said that you held this view
but that it should be done in steps. He said that this had really
been a very arduous trip for you, and I noted that it will be four
weeks if you get back next weekend.
3. During informal conversation, Ambassador Huang commented
on the French election and said that he was personally not surprised
at the outcome because he estimated that D'Estaing would win. This
also confirmed your estimate and suggested that you must be pleased
with the results.
4. In a brief digression on cancer and the mystifying nature of the
disease, the Ambassador said that this was a. area. whe.rer. countries
of the world should cooperate to try to find:s.cilins." and recalled
that President Nixon had mentioned this during his trip to China.
5. As before, Political Counselor Tsien Ta-Yung and Interpreter
Chi Chao Chu were also present, and the atmosphere was very
friendly.
Warm regards and congratulations.
