Trial Opens in Death of Ambassador Davies
Three Greek Cypriots accused of the fatal shooting of
Ambassador Roger Davies went on trial in Nicosia on 9 May.
(See the issue of 8 February.) Ambassador Davies was
killed in August 1974 during a riot directed against the
U.S. embassy following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. On
the second day of the trial, the court received testimony
from a police inspector that he had seen one of the defen-
dants carrying an automatic weapon near the embassy during
the disturbance. The three men, a mechanic and two former
policemen, have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought
