UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT
DATE: 12 December 1950
The attention of the writer has been directed b:111101011010 to the so
called uelectro-sleep" machine currently being used at Richmond, Virginia, at
the University Hospital there.
This machine is approximately about twice the size of the small table
model dictarhone and estimated cost is from ;200 to .300. It is attached to a
patients nead in about the same manner as an electro-enceiphalograph. It is .
felt that under some circumstances -bilis machine could be identified as part of
a Polygraph.
The electro-sleep machine reportedly induces sleep without shock or
convulsiens. Although it woull'not be feasible to use it on any of our own
people because then:: is at least a theoretical danger of temporary brain
damage, it would possibly be of value in curtain areas in connection with
Paw interrogation or on individuals of interest to this Agency.
It is believed that this electrically induced sleep may well be a
medium for obtaining S. I. without the use of drugs which of course would
be extremely valuable for our purposes.
Since there are no electro-sleep machines in or hear Washington, D. C.,
it is requested that authority be ,-iven foii Jfl1to visit the University
Hospital at Hichmond, Virginia, for a period o one day, to examine the
electro-sleep machine and its operation in order to determine whether this
machine could be used advantageously in our operatiens.
In this connection, informed the writer that he has access
to the facilities of the University Hospital as he is known to them as a
diplomateof the American .board of Psychiatry. .
