Kennedy at Los Angeles, California. Curiel had in his possession, a letter written in English, which alleged that he had planned the !assassination of Kennedy while under the influence of 'a drug which would destroy his memory. Curiel indicated he was an American citizen, Newspaper reporters at Juarez interviewed Curiel in detail, at which time he admitted having written the letter, but without giving his motive. He then indicated that he had always wanted to do some- thing big, and he spoke out vigorously, denouncing the Kennedy family as trying to establish a dictatorship in the United States. At the request of Mr. Donald Wehmeyer, L/NEA (ext. 5895), Special Agent in Charge Miles Briggs, Chicago Field Office, was telephonically contacted at 10:00 a.m., June 10, 1968 and asked to obtain the local police account relating to the slaying mentioned in referenced news article. At 1:00 p.m., June 10, 1968 SAC Briggs advised that the victim of the shooting was standing in front of the entrance to his grocery store at 343 East 51st Street, South Chicago, when two (2) male negroes entered the Store and one, while standing behind the victim, shot him in the back of the head with a .38 caliber weapon. It is further reported that two (2) male negroes departed the store immediately without attempting to rob the victim or the store; that they entered an automobile and immediately left the scene of the incident; witnesses were able to furnish local police authorities the license of the vehicle and as a result Mr. Arron Myers, male Negro DOB . , was arrested and admitted being the driver of the vehicle involved. During questioning of Arron Myers, who has been charged with murder, he made e4tatement to the effect that while working at N&ely Brothers Gas Station, 535 East 43rd Street, South Chicago, he was approached by two (2) friends, Mr, Robert Walton aka i and his twin brother Michael Walton who stated that they needed the use of an automobile for a short period of time and would pay Myers $10.00 for its use; that Myers contacted a friend identified as Clayton and obtained permission to use the latter's vehicle; that he drove Robert and Michael Walton to an address in Chicago where they were joined by a woman identified as Mrs. Walton; that he was then told to drive to a location in the vicinity of the victim's store; that while Mrs. Walton remained in the vehicle with Mr. Myers, Robert and Michael Walton left the vehicle and returned shortly; that they appeared to be excited and ordered the driver to leave the area; that shortly thereafter Mr. Myers observed Michael Walton hand his alleged wife an object rapped in a hand- kerchief which appeared to be a gun; that they drove to another location where the gun was thrown into a trash can following which they drove to a further location where Robert and Michael Walton and the latter's wife Exempted from automatic decontrol LIMITED orricIAL U E 2 left the vehicle. It is reported that Robert and Michael Walton are either twin brothers or half brothers. No other identifying data was furnished. With respect to a motive for the slaying of Mr.. Rayyan, local authorities stated that a rumor is present indicating that the victim is alleged to have said in substance that "King and Kennedy should have been dead long ago". Because of the latter reported rumor, locale authorities do not discount the possibility that the victim was assassinated in retaliation for the murder of Senator Robert F. Kennedy in view of the fact that his alleged assassin was a Jordanian immigrant residing in the United States. However, this is inconsistent with the reference newspaper account which states that the victim was an admirer of the Kennedy family; on the wall of his store is a poster with pictures of Abraham Lincoln, John F. I returned his call OD 11 June. He said he had several things he wanted to discuss with me and hoped that I would he able to stop. by and see him' sometime soon in Connecticut. I told him I did expect to be in the New York area within the next two weeks and would try to get out. He is currently involved in finishing his book on the German attack on Holland the movie scenario of The Last Battle which will be filmed in Yugoslavia, and a major TV program. He implied that he had some ,information concerning Soviet attempts to publish hooks on the West and other matters. 2. With some apologies for the improbable, suppositions connected with it, he then told me the following story. In the summer of 1965 his two children flew to the Middle West to visit their grandparents. In the course Of changing planes they called home from Chicago and introduced over the phone a man they had met on the airplane and with -whom they had become good friends. This man was a propagandist for Arab causes attached to the Jordan or Lebanon UN delegation in New York. His name is Sami HADAWI. In view of HADAWI's assiduous cultivation of the children, the RYANs asked HADAWI out to dinner approximatelyaa year ago (the date is not certain but I can check it with RYAN). Present at the dinner among others was John PHILLIPS, the editor of Life. In the course of the evening HADAWI revealed himself ag-W-'violent Arab propagandist and as a man very preoccupied with the assassina- tion of President Kennedy. He stated flatly that "the Jews killed Kenned,' and went into some detail of his reasons for thinking se. He impressed RYAN at the time as being obsessed with assassination in general as well. The day on which 51:N Was revealed as the probable assassin of Robert Kennedy, RYAN immediately thought about HADAWI and also received a call from PHILLIPS who called to check his own impressions with RYAN and join in speculation as to whether HADAWI could have been involved, RYAN then remembered letters that HADAWI had written his children this past spring and in viewing them discovered that HADAWI had outlined an itinerary for a speaking tour that took him to Dallas and then to Los Angeles some. time this spring. (I presume I could get the exact date from RYAN.), The purpose of the speaking tour was to address Arab youth in these areas and strengthen their enthusiasm for the Arab cause. RYAN made it clear that he had no other informa. tion and he did not believe that there was a high possibility of a connection between HADAWI and SIRHANI but thought he would pass the information on anyway.
