Approved For ReleaseJ-~1/0~/~~~11~t-R~~7~304560A002000010016-6 NPIC/R-171/64 MILITARY TRAINING AREA LYUBOML, USSR CARPATHIAN MD A 4,500-acre training area 5 miles (8 kilo- m~~ters) west of Lyuboml at 51-13N 023-55E (higure 1) contains the following facilities: A probable automatic weapons firing range With one diagonal target run with a maximum target distance of 1,600 feet, and four range support buildings, a large open area for combat train- ing, extensive vehicular trackage, personnel trenches, a tracked-vehicle driver training course approximately 5,300 feet by 1,100 feet, and a moving target tank firing range with a target distance of 4,375 feet from static firing line to target, at least two 2,750-foot firing lanes, and two target runs. In addition, three areas of unidentified activity consisting of. ground scarring are located within the train- ing area. vealed no significant change in the size of the training area. Usage appeared consistently heavy during the summer and fall and very light during the winter. Additional vehicular track- age and a probable trench were observed in the combat training ar. ea on -coverage. No wheeled-vehicle driver training courses, artillery firing positions or impact areas, bivouac areas or tent camps, engineer training or water-crossing training sites, or airborne or air transportability training facilities, or rail loading ramps were observed. The area has good access roads. A siding ofE the Kovel-Chelm railroad is located 0.5 mile (0.8 kilometer) southwest of the training area. A primary road was observed under con- struction adjacent to and through the south edge of the training area, running in a gen- erally east-west direction.
