NO FOREIGN DISSEM/CONTROLLED DISSEM
INTRODUCTION
A more heavily armed and modified S.0.1-
type PGM, a P-6-type PGM, and a new class of
YP have been identified on newly-received
photography of North Korean naval combatants
operating in the West Sea Fleet. The photography
was taken in the vicinity of Haeju, North Korea
(38-02N 125-42E), between

No attempt has been made by NPIC to evalu-
ate the engineering data presented in Reference
1. The following data is from a photo-derived
analysis of these previously unreported types/
configurations.
DESCRIPTION
S.O.1-type PGM. Figure 1 shows a standard
Soviet 5.0.1-class SC similar to those operated
NPIC/R-36/67
by the North Korean Navy in the East Sea
Fleet. 2/
Figure 2 shows the modified S.0.1-type PGM
first observed on aerial photography in -
at the Cho-do Naval Base (38-32N 124-52E).
The vessel was identified on ground photogra-
phy of
This unit differs from conventional units
mainly in its armament. The MBU 1800 rocket
launchers have been replaced by a probable 3.35
inch (85mm)/52 caliber dual-purpose forward
main mount; 2 probable 37mm main mounts are
installed in place of the original 2 twin-barrel
25mm weapons; 2 light-caliber mounts are
installed atop the after deckhouse; and the depth
charge racks have been removed.

The vessel in Figure 3 is essentially the PTF. No torpedo tubes are installed on the
same as the one in Figure 2 with one exception. PGM.
A third probable 37mm main mount has been
installed near the stern.
P-6-type PGM. Figure 4 shows a Chinese
Communist P-6-class I "I in its normal con-
figuration.
Figure 5 shows the North Korean modifica-
tion, a P-6-type PGM. It differs from the
standard version by having a 37mm mount in
place of the original dual 25mm installation, a
second 37mm mount positioned aft, and 2 athwart-
ship 25mm mounts, making the armament
identical to that of the 130-ft Shanghai-class

YP. A previously unreported type of YP is
shown in Figure 6. The overall length of this
vessel is estimated to be 50-60 ft, and the hull
appears to be constructed of wood. Armament
consists of 1 light automatic weapon forward
and 2 aft. This vessel type has not yet been
sighted at any naval base or shipyard.
Previously Reported Vessels
The following 2 combatants, also described
in Reference 1, were identified in-but
are included in this report to provide a more
comprehensive review of new or modified North
Korean West Sea Fleet patrol vessels.
K-48-type PGM. Figure 7 shows the
standard configuration of a K-48-class SC.
Figure 8 is a K-48-type PGM armed with four
37mm main batteries, 1 forward and 3 aft, but
without any evidence of ASW armament. This
modified K-48 was first observed onaerialpho-
140-foot-class PGM. This vessel, shown in
Figure 9, was first observed at the Sagon-ni
Naval Facility (37-49N 1.:5-20E) on-
aerial photography and idea sified on ground pho-
tography- its armament consists of

batteries aft and 2 machit a guns mounted atop
the deckhouse.
