This report on the Cho-do Naval Facility is one of a continuing series
of reports by NPIC on North Korean port and naval installations. The Cho-
do Naval Facility provides berthing for patrol units guarding the sea
approach to Nampo, the principle west coast port facility and to Pyongyang,
the national capital. The extreme tidal range on the west coast of Korea,
which causes extensive mud flats at low water, severely restricts the
location of operational bases, enhancing the capability of the Cho-do Naval
Facility, which is located on deep water.

On the NE side of Cho-do (island), 27 nm SW of the Nampo port facility.
This installation can provide limited logistic support for patrol
craft. Units observed at this base include PTF, PGM and SC.
Facilities include 1 dog-leg breakwater with a small offshore wharf,
6 administration/support buildings, a small probable barracks complex with
15 buildings and several small sheds.
A shoal bank with depths of 3/1+ fathom to 5 fathoms extends about 6
miles southwestward from a position about 1 l/1+ nm WSW of the SE end of
Cho-do. There are other shoal banks to the east, NE, and north.
