SOVETSKAYA GAVAN, USSR
Sovetskaya Gavan is the most important naval base in the Maritime
Province north of Vladivostok. It is situated on the east coast of Siberia
on the Gulf of Tartary, and ' is.: the terminus of the 804-kilometer single
track line which leaves the Trans-Siberian Railroad at Dezhnevka, 37
kilometers west of Khabarovsk. An analysis of traffic on this line was
presented in HTA/JM-18/58.
The Railroad Station, Yards and Shops, which serve the entire Sov-
etskaya Gavan area, are actually located in the small town of Pyatisotka.
However, the railroad extends beyond Pyatisotka approximately 26 kil-
ometers southeast to the town of Sovetskaya Gavan proper.
Facilities in the Sovetskaya Gavan (Pyatisotka) Station, Yards and
Shops are annotated on the accompanying line drawing and described in
the following key to annotations.

Turning-wye, controlling length 270 feet.
Four warehouses measuring 1'70 by 35 feet, 120 by 30 feet, and two 170
by 30 feet.
Water tower, 30 feet in diameter.
Freight car repair/maintenance shed, 220 by 65 feet, with two through
tracks.
Boilerhouse, 90 by 80 feet.
Maintenance shop, 130 by 60 feet.
Locomotive repair/maintenance shed, 190 by 90 feet, with three through
tracks.
Two warehouses, 140 by 20 feet, and 280 by 30 feet, rail served.
Two warehouses, 260 by 40 feet, and 185 by 45 feet, rail served.
Passenger station, 150 by 50 feet over-all. .
General purpose yards 6-8 tracks wide; maximum length 3,900 feet,
effective length 2,000 feet.
