The Wu-chang Shipyard (30?32'N/114?17'E) in Wu-chang, China, is
located at the junction of the Hsun-ssu and Yangtze Rivers. This shipyard,
completed about-, has gained importance as a possible construction
site for submarines and minesweepers.

A study of this photography revealed
considerable construction activity on the building ways, including two
possible "W" Class submarines and two unidentified vessels, 200 by 40

ground photos revealing some of the major shop buildings of the shipyard.
It appears that fitting out operations at this shipyard are performed either
on the 'uilding ways or elsewhere on the river after launching occurs.

The Soviet-styled launching system consists principally of a transfer
platform (Figure 3, Item 32a) and launching barge (Item 32b). From either
the repair yard (Item 34) or the building ways (Item 29) a-vessel may be
moved longitudinally onto the marine.railway carriage (Item 32c) and then
moved laterally along the transfer platform to a_ porgy- fqrward and on line
with the launching barge. When properly positioned the vessel, via a set
of rails, is moved longitudinally off the carriage anti onto the barge. The
barge then moves into deeper water where launching occurs.
The following vessels were observed in in the vicinity of
the boatyard: one dredge, 220 feet long; two "W" Class submarines,
245 feet long; one barge, 145 feet long; one bare, 110 feet long; and
numerous smaller river craft.
