Verkhoturye (58-53N 60-43E) is 145 miles north of Sverdlovsk on the
single-track railroad (Route 454)* leading from Nizhniy Tagil north to Serov.
As shown on the accompanying line drawing, the relatively minor rail
facilities include the following: rail yard six to eight tracks wide, 3,400 feet
long; locomotive or car repair shop, 210 by 100 feet, containing four or five
stalls; turning wye, effective length, 400 feet; water tank, 20-25 feet in dia-
meter; and a coal-storage yard, 1,000 by 290 feet.
The principal industries in Verkhoturye are related to wood processing.
These industries are served by a narrow-gauge logging railroad, with total
trackage of approximately 125 kilometers, which leads to extensive logging
operations east and northeast of Verkhoturye.
