Mr. Fred Seely, Managing Editor
The Florida Times-Union

Dear Fred:
Thank you for your letter of 6 February and
for expressing your encouragement in meeting one
of our most difficult challenges--raising the level
of understanding and rallying the support of the
American people for the important intelligence
enterprise.
I also appreciate your invitation, but some
of us have to fight our uphill battles in more
frigid climes.
Thank you again for your kind words.
Sincerely,
/s! C. rlued1

Dear Frank:
I found your talk before Rotary a very informative one
and I congratulate you on the frankness of your presentation.
The points you made concerning Freedom of Information
and First Amendment rights were well taken, and I confess
they were in accord with my own thoughts.
As a managing editor, I find myself in disagreement with
many of my peers who think that national security is nothing
more than a copyrighted story for their pages. The correlation
you drew between your problems and the press' problems was
perfect; I only wish that more of my peers would look past the
next day's editions and think of the overall impact.
I am not one to say that we should hide everything. The
CIA will make mistakes, just as The Florida Times-Union will,
and they should be brought into the open and admitted to the
taxpayers. The CIA has brought problems upon itself by hiding
mistakes, and candor (such as you displayed) will prove to be
beneficial in the long haul.
Please don't quit forcefully stating the Agency's view-
point. Your message is one which should be told forcefully,
just as you told it to Rotary and just as Admiral Turner told
it to a national television audience the previous day.
As a journalist, I am alarmed at recent Supreme Court
decisions regarding press freedom and protection of confidential.
sources. As a citizen, I am alarmed at recent legislation which
opens CIA files.

I fully agree that we are partners in this battle, and
again I urge you to keep bringing your message to the public.
Thanks for visiting with us flatlanders down here in
what we call. "Deep South Georgia". I heard many good comments
from fellow Rotarians, and I suspect we'll allow Max Morris to
stay in the club even though most of his friends are pointy-
headed bureaucrats such as Frank Carlucci.
Come back and visit with us. The golf is excellent, the
social life is equal to Burning Tree's and the only security
threats are those who rob crab traps.
Sincerely,
red Seely
