It will continue to be published bimonthly in this new format. Dissemination of the report was previously limited to holders of the DWG report, Soviet Surface-to-Surface Missile Deployment. Because the information contained herein is both supplemental and self-sustaining, distribution will no longer be limited to holders of the above report. The current format provides a comprehensive, ready reference listing of all ICBM, IRBM, and MRBM deployment locations, types of site configurations, photographic references, estimated construction and operational status, and other evaluations of the DWG. Additional data may be added to future revisions. Approved For Relea 0 C 00510005-1 25X1 25X1 Approved For ReT jb 2Q 6 1 -1 : CIA-RDP78TO47 7AOOMNQ10005-1 Approved For R~I se T/Q9L26 . The fifth revision, dated 1 February 1963 and disseminated under control number isting instructions for handling 0 material. There has been no evidence from any source to revise the basic information included in the 1 February revision. However, a reanalysis of all available photography of each ICBM site was made in an effort to determine more precisely the construction timing and pace of the Soviet deployment program. This effort resulted in minor changes in our estimates of operational status. A total of 136 ICBM launchers has been identified to date at deployed complexes. Of this total, about 100 are believed to be opera- tional. See Figure 1 for locations of deployed ICBM complexes. The four basic ICBM site configurations are characterized as follows: TYPE I - A first-generation soft site with a rail-served pad similar to Launch Complex A or B, Tyura Tam. To date, this type has been observed only at Plesetsk. TYPE II - A second-generation soft site with two road-served pads similar to Launch Complex C, Tyura Tam. This type was first observed at Yur'ya and subsequently at 11 other locations. There are two basic modifications of this type.* TYPE III - A hardened site observed at Launch Complex D, Tyura Tam, and at eight confirmed ICBM complexes. Each site consists of two launchers (prob- ably silo type) and a control bunker. The degree of hardening cannot be determined from available evidence. The excavations during construction are about 200 feet wide and 500 feet long. An accurate measurement of depth has not been determined from photography. TYPE IV - A soft configuration consisting of two road-served launch pads. The con- figuration was first observed at Tyu- men' and subsequently at three other confirmed ICBM complexes. It differs from TYPE II sites as fol- lows: (1) the pad separation is be- tween 800 and 870 feet instead of 980 feet, (2) the ready building is 820 feet from the pad and is smaller (115 by 130 feet), and (3) there is a "plus sign" pattern at the rear or side of the launch area at most of the sites under construction, the pur- pose of which has not been deter- mined. *The USAF and DIA members of GMAIC believe that there are three configurations of this type. They assert that the Type IV site is but another modification of the Type II site. The NSA member believes that all soft, road- served ICBM sites should be grouped as Type II until the missile system involved has been determined.
