TOP SECRET Approved For r77 2-0031091 SO - 47 01000010049-5 21( 2f 1 r r 2 2 Approved CIA PIR-71001 The Yevpatoriya Deep-Space Tracking Center is located near the town of Yevpatoriya on the Crimean Peninsula (Figure 1). It consists of two separate facilities--the North Station, which is a receiving site, and the South Station, a transmitting site. In addition, there is a microwave facility located between these two stations. The chronological history of these three components will be developed in the order stated above, utilizing fours emissions: 1 -1 r or Re a?MWE? CIA IMAGERY ANALYSIS DIVISION YEVPATORIYA DEEP-SPACE TRACKING CENTER, USSR INTRODUCTION All measurements have been made by the NPIC Technical Intelligence Division and are considered to be accurate within ? 10 feet or ? 10 percent, whichever is greater. NORTH STATION (RECEIVING SITE) The North Station is located at 45-13-15N 33-09-30E, approximately nine nautical miles (nm) west-northwest of Yevpatoriya. It is the larger 25X1 2X of the two stations. When first seen on photography 25X it consisted of two separate antenna systems ;,:] Figure 2), approximately 12 support buildings, and an unidentified tower (Figure 2). The poor quality of the photography precluded a more precise identification of the antennas and support buildings. The station appeared to be fenced. the North Station was observed on good quality, cloud-free photography. Between 25X several major changes or additions were n e , ana i iona y e oetter quality photography permitted a more detailed description. The two separate antenna systems, A and B, appear to be identical in all visible aspects. Each system consists of eight 50-foot dishes mounted in banks of four in a line (Figure 4). These dishes are rigidly mounted as one unit with the entire unit being rotatable in azimuth and elevation. Both antenna banks differ in azimuthal position from the positions observed in 25X Approved For R19 se 3kil/ Approve For Fetes?EJAIf Approximately 25 buildings were added to the supporting elements within the fenced area. These buildings are numbered and keyed to Figure 2 and Table 1. All information pertaining to these buildings is tabulated in Table 1. A subsequently identified dish (Figure 2, Item G) was first observed on this mission. However, e small scale of photography precluded an identification at that time. Between I I construction was begun on three structures (Figure 2, Items C, D, and E) of apparent major significance to the deep-space tracking capability of this Center. These structures are probable concrete pedestals located on large concrete pads. They appear to be almost identical in design to the large concrete pedestal cited in the previously published report on the Simferopol Space Tracking and Communication Center (CIA/PIR-61108, dated April 1966) on Figure 7, lower left photograph. Also the construction timing compares very favorably. Additionally, on this photography I I approximately 11 new buildings were observed within the facility Figure 2 and Table 1). A second, subsequently identified, dish (Figure 2, Item F was observed adjacent to the previously no e dish. The two fishes appear to be connected by a cable renc Oni photography I of the Center was obtained but stereoscopic interpretability was severely hampered by scattered clouds and cloud shadow. However, many previously identified objects and several new developments are now seen in greater detail on this larger scale photography. Therefore, descriptive terms applied to Table 1 are extracted from this photography with all mensuration being from F_ I The most significant new development observed is a ditch running from the concrete pad at Antenna A to the pad at Antenna B (Figure 2). This ditch is also connected to control buildings 47 and 51. Other new developments are the addition of two building foundations (Figure 2, Items 3 and 4). The aforementioned three probable concrete pedestals can be definitely identified as such on this coverage. One of the pedestals (Figure 2, Item E, Table 1) is braced by anchor points, similar to those seen at Simferopol for use by an overhead structural crane in the emplacement of a large parabolic dish. SOUTH STATION (TRANSMITTING SITE) The most recent coverage of the South Station was on The South Station is located at 45-10-20N 33-15-30E, four nm southeast of the North Station. This station has remained essentially unchanged since first seen on photography However, improved image quality of each subsequent coverage has allowed some enhancement of the original description. this station consisted of one subsequently identified antenna system (Figure 3, Item A), and approximately 28 assorted buildings in support of the station. Poor image quality of the photography precluded a more detailed description of the facilities at that time. On photography five additional support buildings, not previously identified, were observed (Figure 3, Items 11, 26, 30, 32, & 33, Table 2). Also, a cooling pond, approximately 75 feet in diameter, was observed adjacent to the antenna bank (Figure 3, Item A). The antenna bank, consisting of eight parabolic dishes grouped in two rows of four dishes, is identical in appearance and mensuration to the two antenna banks at the North Station. but no identification could be made due to extremely poor image quality of the available photography. The Microwave Station was present in the microwave tower could be identified as such and was erected adjacent to a control building. The site appeared to be within a fenced area approximately 190 feet on a side with a power trace leading off in the direction of the North Station. The height of the microwave tower is approximately 240 feet. No reflector identification nor orientation was possible at that time. Approved For ReTTeeWbT/ For Relea CIA/PIR-71001 , one support building had been added within the secured area. The two buildings associated with the microwave tower are approximately 30 by 20 feet and 25 by 25 feet in size. Small scale of the photography precludes further interpretation. Although there is a lack of additional activity at the South Station, there appears to be a period of major construction of new electronic facil- ities at the North Station. The three new concrete pedestals (Figure 2, Items C, D, & E) are very similar to the new pedestal at Simferopol and also to the pedestal supporting the 100-foot radio telescope at the Sim- feropol Center (CIA/PIR-61108). This indicates that, in all probability, three large dishes will appear in the near future at Yevpatoriyaon these three pedestals. Throughout the development of the chronology at the North Station, it was observed that each of the two antenna banks (Figure 2, Items A and B) are probably capable of operation independent of the other. On at least two occassions , the two antenna banks were oriented on di renu zzrnLr u .
