TRUMAN FOR CBS-TV "FYI" PROGRAM FOR SUNDAY, MAY 1, 11-11:30 EST For almost ten years, Radio Free Europe has been beaming its transmitters to the countries behind the Iron Curtain, bringing messages of truth and hope to the 76 million people living there under the domination of the Soviet Communists. I was President at the time these broadcasts were first beamed to those captive people, and I have followed the results of the campaign of Radio Free Europe ever since. Radio Free Europe very properly came into being as a private operation, privately sponsored by the contributions of millions of Americans from all walks of life, as an expression of their concern for the plight of the people in the captive nations. Approved For Release 2002/08/21 : CIA-RDP80BO1676R003600080022-3 Approved For Release 2002/08/21 : CIA-RDP80BO1676R003600080022-3 The reasons for the need of Radio Free Europe are as vital today as they were at the beginning, and, I think even more so. These people have no other means of getting the truth about what is going on in the world -- on both sides of the Iron Curtain. And these people have learned that they can absolutely rely on Radio Free Europe to provide them with the facts and the truth. They also need to know that we Americans continue to believe that they should have the same right to decide the form of government under which they want to live as we in the United States insist for ourselves. At a time when the leaders of the world are meeting to try to resolve their many differences, it is particularly important that the people behind the Communist news blackout get the truth through Radio Free Europe, their only reliable source. Approved For Release 2002/08/21 : CIA-RDP80BO1676R003600080022-3 Approved For Release 2002/08/21 : CIA-RDP80BO1676R003600080022-3 For these reasons so important to the future of the free world, let us support Radio Free Europe with generous contributions. Share your precious gift of truth and freedom with the less fortunate people behind the Iron Curtain -- by your support of Radio Free Europe.
