Informant indicated that Hermes came to Berlin principally because Karlshorst had recently expressed the desire to have a talk with him. However, informant does not expect that the result of any discussion that may take place will be very favorable with respect to a Soviet change of attitude toward the CDU in general, and toward that party's freedom of develop- ment.. 2. Since Hermes' arrival in Berlin, Karishorst has again expressed the wish to see Hermes. Rather than give him an appointment 25X1A6a at Karlshorst, Karishorst has left the choice of a meeting place to Hermes, including the non-Soviet sectors of Berlin. Comment: Former Deputy :Mayor of Berlin and chief of 'the Berl a r Food Q'ffice, Hermes was forced to resign from the CDU under Russian pressure.
