TYURATAM MISSILE TEST
CENTER
CENTRAL SUPPORT FACILITY
The central support facility for the Tyuratam Missile
Test Center is composed of a group of small generally un-
related ancillary facilities located near the junction of the
access road to Complex I and the test center main road,
approximately 16 nm north-northeast of the main support
base at 45-53N 063-27E (Figure 1). The separate facili-
ties that make up the central support facility include a
a Type I SAM support fa-
cility, an air warning radar facility, a possible training
school, and a probable warehouse area which is still under
construction (Figures 2 and 3).
Construction in the central support facility was apparent
as early as when the area was
observed to contain a ore rail spur under construction
and a construction support area containing a batch plant, an
open storage area, and quarters for construction personnel.
located at the end of the
longest fork of the new rail spur, was the first of the facili-
ties to be started. It consists of a triple-fenced storage
area containing a road-served, earth-covered storage
bunker, a road- and rail-served weapons checkout building,
and a rail siding with adjacent road-served hardstand. 1/

the SAM support facility
I work had begun on
and just north of the
main road serving the east end of the rangehead. No evi-
dence of the rectangular Type I SAM support facility was
apparent in it presently con-
sists of an assembly and checkout area enclosed by a board
fence, and a separately fenced equipment storage area.
Contained within the assembly and checkout area are all
the elements necessary to receive, store, assemble, and
check out SA-2 missiles. The largest building in this
portion of the facility is a rectangular building with drive-
through road service along its short axis, probably used
for receiving and storing sustainer stages. To the rear of
this large drive-through building are 2 smaller drive-
through buildings, probably used to assemble and check out
completed SA-2 missiles. Additional structures within this
area, some of which are revetted, are thought to be for the
storage of boosters, warheads, fuses, and fuel. The equip-
Approved
ment storage area at the east end of the facility contains
6 vehicle/equipment storage buildings and an additional
fenced compound. A heat plant and several other smaller
unidentified buildings are also located within the facility.
Outside the security fence southwest of the SAM support
facility is a large, nearly square revetted area connected
by road to the assembly and checkout area. The purpose
of this revetment has not been determined. A water stor-
age and distribution facility consisting of 2 large storage
tanks, a pumphouse, and a separately secured auxiliary
building is just south of the SAM support facility, between
it and the rail line serving the eastern end of the rangehead.
To the east, is a small substation and a railroad station.

Southeast of the air warning radar facility,
is a group of
multistory buildings which were under construction as
early as he relatively large number of
vehicles and other pieces of equipment, and the general
layout of the facility suggest that its function maybe that
of a technical training school,
I
At the southeast
edge of this area are 2 rectangular rail-served buildings
which are at least partly enclosed by a fence. Each of
these buildings is served by 4 rail spurs, but neither is
served by an improved road. Their function has not been
established definitively, but they may be related to some
portion of the training involving the handling of missiles.
Initial construction of this possible training school was ob-

It now contains
25 major buildings, numerous smaller support buildings
and sheds, 2 associated vehicle/equipment parks, a heat
plant, and a swimming pool. Near the entrance, just east
of the entrance road, is a rectangular area secured by a
board fence enclosing a small, nearly square building and
a pattern of walkways. A pair of tall towers or masts is
located at the end of 2 of the walkways and a pair of
shorter towers or structures is located at the end of 2
other walkways. This facility may be a weather station.
The westernmost element of the central support facil-
ity, located southwest of the air warning radar facility,
is a fence-secured area containing 9 buildings. At least
4 of the buildings have broad road-served concrete aprons in
front of them, suggesting that they may be warehouses or
storage buildings. Three other buildings have the ap-
pearance of warehouses, but have not yet been provided
with road access. Two building foundations and consider-
able open ditching also are visible within the single security
fence. One of these ditches presently extends through the
southeast fenceline and terminates at a point southeast of
a nearby lake. A steamline, which is still under construc-
tion, is being extended toward this facility from the heat
plant associated with the possible technical training school.
Construction of this probable warehouse area was first seen
in and can be negated in
