TITLE- Automatic Control of the Surface Purity of Steel Strips
FERioDim: stall, 1960, No. 8. pp. 734-735
TEXT.-. At the MMK steel strips are cleaned in a machine designed by the
NIIKhIMMASh, operating with an alkaline electrolyte at a maximum speed of 5 m/sec.
Theequipment, however, only removes grease from the strip surface and not any
impurities caused by carbon, iron and iron oxides; moreover, a close check on the
strip surface cleaned with this machine is only possible with laboratory Instru-
ments, while.control during production is rather primitive (with paper or cotton)
and is not sufficiently accurate, as the strip cann6t be controlled along its
entire surface, nor Is It possible to make up for inadequate degreasing. Due to
these shortcomings, about 100-150 tons of steel strips per month could not be
t1nned in this plant. Incomplete cleaning of the strip surface became of special
importance when manual sorting was replaced by automatic sorting, as the latter
only signals perforations in the strips and deviations In their thickness, but

does not reject strips with impurities. In order to eliminate these drawbacks an
apparatus for the continuous and automatic control of the strip surface (a so-
called "su-rface-indleator") was designed In the NIIKhIMMASh. This apparatus
consists of four transmitters and schemes for selecting the maximum signal for
Impurities. The schemes and the transmitters form one unit. The essential part
of the apparatus is a measuring device, defining the quantity of light reflected
from the controlled surface with the aid of a photoresistor. The rays of light
emitted by the electric lamps pass through a light filter and are reflected from
the strin surface. Next they strike the photoresistor which is connected to the
arm of the measuring bridge, When the rays are reflected from a part of the surface
covered with Impurities, the amount of light falling on the photoresistor decreases,
thus increasing the ohmic resistance. The entire width of the strip Is controlled
by this apparatus which Is mounted before the coiling machine. As the strip sur-
face passing under the transmitters is not covered uniformly with impurities, a
logistic scheme (VAH = ILI) is applied In deter-mining the maximum amount of
Impurities on any part of the strip surface (Fig. 4). When applying four positive
potentials (Ul, U2Y U3, _J4) of different values at the four outputs (a, 6, 9, 1 =
a, b, v, g) the voltage at the output Uou, [Abstracter's note: subscript out Is

maximum signal obtained. The indicator is a micro-ammeter with 100 scale divisiom
The indications of the micro-ammeter are converted graphically into quantities of
impurities on the strip up to 100 mglm2; beyond' this value the accuracy of meas-
urements is no longer reliable. It was found that the indications of the micro-
ammeter were in direct proportion with the amount of impurities (e. g., 50,u a on
the ammeter corresponds to 50 mg/m2 impurities). The device is easy to operate
and detects defects and irregularities in the degreasing process and other phases
of production immediately (for instance the presence of soda stains on the strip
shows that the bath has not the correct concentration of
alkali, etc.). The sensitivity of the device is suffi-
cient to indicate even such small amounts of impurities
as 2 mg/W. There are 4 figures. R41 R,

,ABSTRACT: The double microscope of V.P.LINM, member of the Acadapy, is
known to be used for the investigation of surface quality as
well as for measuring unevennesses of the surface from I to 60,14L
and more. It can also be uzed for the investigation of grooves and
cavities of a depth of up to 0,05-0,06 mm, in which case the
groove mat be sufficiently long, so that the beams can be re-
flected from the groove bottom under an angle of 45c. The use of
a photoelemont makes it possible to carry out measurements ob-
jeotively and more rapidly. Besides, such a photoelectric de-
vioe may be used for the automatic testing of various products.
For the automatic determination of the amount of shift of the
aperture image it is necessary, instead of the angle bisector
of the miorosoope ocular, to use the edge of the untrans-
parent roller blind and a photoelement. In the cue of the
shifting of the aperture image with respect to the edge of the
roller blind, the intensity of the light current upon the

photoolement changes. In order to restore its original value, the
roller blind must be shifted to the same extent as the aperture
image. It is thus possible, from this shifting, to draw conclusions
as to the deviations of the reflecting surface, which are pro-
portional to me another. The derivation values of a reflt4ntiag
surface can be evaluated on the basis of the change of light
current intensity impiaing upon the photoelement; this method is,
however, characterized by a nwber of sources of errors which are
detrimental to its accuracy. With the aid Of 3 illustrations the
construction and the operation of such devices is then described
and explained in detail. On such automatically working devices
it is poseible to teat and to sort out woricpieces with an accuracy

ABSTRACT: In this article the author substantiates the need for a daily observation of the

importance of a regular check of the potentiometers. The basic operations of checking
potentiometers, i.e., determination of the error and variation of the readings and the thresh-
old of sensitivity, are examined. The roading"I of 010 instrunlont lind it'i nonfiltivity 11111ta ho

The ultimate purpose of these operations Is to elicit the measuring properties of the potentiom-
;.eter. Although the education of the personnel operating the instruments is a factor to be
taken into account, the decisive role in the proper operation of potentiometers belongs to the
inspection organizations for hydrometeorological instruments. Potentiometers operating
aboard ships should undergo a rigorous inspection. Orig. art. has: 3 figures.

TEXT: The electro-hydraulic drive is a power ampiifier without
feedback. Howevert the relationship between the input of s6fvome-
chanism and the load forms an equivalence to a negative feedback.
The unit (Fig. 1) consists of a two-chamber gear pump i, electric
motor 2, control by a polarized relay 3, and valve and working memX
ber - servomotor 4. The piston of the latter is actuated by the
difference in pressure determined by the position of valve spools
10 and 11, controlled by relay tie rod 15 and the rocker. The pro-
portionality between the input signals of the polarized relay and
the position of its armature is ensured by spring 20. When no con-

T@e author quotes analytical worlk for calculating the sta'tic cha-
racteristics of the drive, where he ties the displacement of spool
h, with the speed of its travel. The torque is given by
A4=4p,F (I

where Rc is the radius of the crank, F is the piston area, and a
is a parameter which takes into consideration the load effect on
pump delivery. In the case of small displacements h, the torque
characteristic is linear, whereas in the working range this is
achieved by an increase of the initial pressure, p or the croo.;
section of piston F. The latter arrangement reduceS the sDeed of
power of piston. The static speed characteristic is then c@-,nsile-

proportional to the cross section of the piston. An equation is
deduced for spool displacement at the start of motion n s, in rela-

tion to the initial and starting pressures. In order to determine
the effect of the initial pressure, experiments were carried out
whose results are plotted. These allow the following conclusions To
be made. The speed of the output shaft w as a function of the sig-
nai current is independent of the initial pressure. The maximum
speed cor;@esponds to full closure of valve orifice connected with
working chamber of cylinder, and completely open exhaust. The star-
ting current decreases with the rise of p 0. The speed of return
stroke drops when initial pressure goes up. The slope of speed cha-
racteristic is constant for all load torques. Tne increase of p

causes a straightening of the torque characte,-4-stic, whose slope
is maximum at po = U. This curve exhibits saturation for certain 1/4@
values of signal current. There are 8 figures.
