Dear Tony:
Thanks very much for your letter of 20 May concerning
your son's interest in the field of intelligence. It was
good to hear from you, and I appreciate your kind comments.
While we are always pleased to learn of young people
who are interested in a career in intelligence, our needs
for military officers are extremely few and are limited to
those officers of the Armed Forces who have a particular
skill or training for which we might have a specific need.
As you can appreciate, this is not true in the case of
those who are newly commissioned and at the junior officer
level. We are still absorbing all the people who worked
in Southeast Asia.
In the event that your son does not elect to follow
,a career in the Marine Corps, we would be glad to consider
him for employment as a civilian with this organization. at
the time he leaves the Service.
Thanks for writing. Hope this finds you and yours
well and flourishing.
Faithfully,
A

Dear General Walters,
I read in the papers where you are resigning
from the Army after all these years of service and that
Congress has to pass special legislation for you to re-
tire as a Lt. General. You are one of the highest rank-
ing persons that got their commission through the OCS
program. I hope Congress passes the necessary legis-
lation to retire you as a Lt. General which is the rank
you have rightfully earned. Having served under your
command in 1967-1968 when you were the Defense Attache
in Paris, France, I know you and your experience have
contributed much to the U.S. Army and the United States
government.
