Abstract This article gives the results of tha variety trials of
different varieties of sprinr wheat on the fttia variety
testing plot (KirGiz SSR) under conditions of irriCAtion.
Jlmng the soft wheat varieties, the first place from the
staadpoint of yie.'~d, was taken by the variety Kazald-,staa-
skaya 126 (31 centners/ha, or 7.4 centners ziore thar. the
control variety Erithrospermm 841). Among the hard
wheat varieties, the variety Narodnaya 9428 produced the
tgeatest yield (27-1 centnem/ha or 1.2 centnera rv)rc

Abstract : Discussing the working procedures of several Im.-Se Soviet lumber
enterprises the author suggests certain measures for the reductIon or
evev. elimination of time-consuming work In those Industries.
It Is suggested that various minor operations such as grading, marking,
sto, be done by timber processing plants Insteml of In the forests.
The required output of a lumber worker In the U3SR to 10 per vorking

Calculation of Low-Powered Transformers (Cont.)
COVERAGE: The book presents In a systematic form the methods of calcu-
lation and design of low-capacity power transformers, auto-
transformers,, peak and'pulse transformers. Mamples of
engineering calculations are given. No personalities or
institutions are mentioned. However, several types of trans-
formers of Soviet design and proddetion are deaoribed and
some specifications are given. There are 8 Werences, 5 of
which are Soviet, and 3 are translations.

PERIODICAL: Izvestiya. Akademii nauk SSSR, Otdslen:Lye tekhnicheskikh

ABSTRACT: In the experiments reported the flow inside the tube was
proirlded with a swlrl by means of pre-swIrling devices at
the entry. The pitch of the resulting helical flow could
be varied. Helix angles between 0 0 (axial entry) and
900 (tangential entry) couid be produced. The test rig
conaisted of a horizontal tube of 32 mo dia. (inside) and
a tiest, length of 1 236 mm. Ambient air was admitted into
a container, where it was electrically heated. The air
entered the tttbe from this container. After traversing
the test tube and a measuring length, the air was drawn
intio the suction socket of a fan# The tes,t tube was
surrounded with a jacket filled with boiling water supplied
from a tank. The steam forming as a rosult of heat trans-
Cardl/2 ferred to the boiling water was extract-led from each of
several sections of the jacket through coolers into

measuring containers. In the air-entry container different
swirl vane units or units with a tangential air entry could
be mounted. A variety of units yielded flows in the full
rangs of helix angles. The alr-entry temperature was around
400 C and the air flows varied between 2.3 and 12.68 g1s.
Reynolds numbers varied between 3 000 and 19 000. A con-
venient presentation of the text resultm in provided by tho
ratio of the Nusselt number observed with swirled flow to the
Nusselt number in axial flow. This ratio is larger than unity
by an additional term consisting of a factor multiplied by the
diameter-to-length ratio of the tube. This factor expresses
the increase in heat transfer and has been obtained experi-..
mentally as a function of the flow helix angle and other
parameters. The- significant criterion for heat-exchanger
applications it; the heat flow through a given heat-transfer
area for an ecjpkl expenditure of power upon motion of the air
in the tube. Such a comparison has beert derived by evaluation
of tests carriod outo Swirling units With kangential *Ir
entry producing highly twisted air flowni yield a gain in heat
Card2/2 transfer in the sense defined above of 60-7316 compared with
axial flow. There are 5 figures, 3 tables and 2 Soviet refs.

TEXT: The experimental arrangement consisted eoeentially of et horizontal
tube having a diameter of 31.66 mmv Ito length w *&a 1236 mm. The tube was
heat-inBulated with respect to the feed pipe and was looated in a tube-
like container. The latter was subdivided into six sections along its
length, which were fed with boiling water. Seven different devices for
the production of a t*isting flow were used-* As may be 'neon from the expe-
rimental results represented in the diagrams, the use of internal devices
for the production of twisting flows are the most effective at high gas
temperatures, where the heat exchange Is increased because of thermal
radiation.--If s/d < 6 holds for the devioa, where d in 'the pitch and
d the tube diameter, the twisting flow exerts an essential influence upon

ABSTRACTs A solutiim is constructed for certain two-dimensional nmetationary
problems an the motion of two planar'piatons in & polytropio gas. One problem
considered is that of a polytropic gas whose equation of state is jp- ate, where p is
press=@$ P in density9 -1 in the adiabatic indicatorg and d2 is a constant. At an
initial time t - o the gas in at rest within a bounded space formed by ~he angle of
intersection of two planes Piand P2. 'The angle oc between then is 0
