TEXTs AA I* Frunkin (Ref. 1) showed that during diPsolution of jaetals in
acid electrolytes, both equilibrium potentials and kion-91juilibriim
potentials cain ooc.~ir, depending on the, ratio of the electrodia processes
proceeding on the dissolving metal. Thereforep an attempt has now been
made to find out whether a transition from non-equilibrium to equilibrium
potential is possible by changing the concentration~of acid and minc ions
during the diseolution of Zu in sulfuric acid. Na SO, containing dif-

I ABSTRACT: The theinnally har4tenable alloy VT3-1 (5. 5% Al, 2% Alo, 2%; Cr, 0. QI Fe, 0. 2%

on the nature of these changes are contradictory, the article eluckk"s it over a broad range
of temperatures, on the basis of x-ray diffraction analysis of forged specimens of the alloy
beated to from 200 to 1050*C for, It hr and cooled in water and subsequently aged for,9. h; at
from 100 to 700dC. Debyegrams ivere taken with the aid of an UPS-50EK diffractometer (CU Ka

strength and dccrease in plastiel, 6 W40rat*3 exceod'ing the
temperature of a+ a -P transformation'to due to foil~&Uoi of bib a I-pbase. Agling at 460-
~-50&C of the' alloy club"ncbed from 800-1050'C leads to a iharp inerbaso 1h hardness and de- i
crease in plasticity. The dccompostion. of the metastable pfiases,(O~ ~11' a 11, at 300.-600*C is I
accompanied by a redistribution of alloy elements which leads to a high saturation of the
0-phase with Cr, Mo, Fe at aging temperatures of 450-600"C. The +kmperaturc region of
existence of the supersaturated 0-phase coincides with the maximum hardness of the alloy
(470 kg/mm2). These findings indicate that the hardening of the alloy during Its aging is not
due to the w-phaso bat rather to, the decomposition of the metastable phases 0, C1 I', Cr I and the
formation of sectors with disperse hetero-phase structure. This hiformation is of practical
significance: since Cho VT3-1 alloy is used as the material of viork-parts performing at
temperatures of up tD450*C, uving Oda, alloy in quenched state ma lead to an increase in the

hardness and a decrease In the Plasticity of the metal. The canducied analysis of phase trans.-
formations demonstrites the need to introduce the operation of agJal g following quenching from
temperatures higher than 450-500"C. Following quenching'from 80'~C tho optimal aging regime.

ABSTRACT: A largo group of authigenic milnersils is found in the
sandy and silty Oligocene and Miocene rocks. The author
has investigated chiefly those minerals that showed a
marked influence on increasing the effective ,.apacity
(porosity) of the rock; calcite, dolomite, analcite,
mordenite, stilbite, chlorite, qumrtz, ahalcedonyj,
alkalic feldspar, brown iron hydroxides$ gypeam, kao-

factors that controlled the formation of the authigenic minerals are
the pH and rH of the liquid phas3 in the sandstone,, Dicti mineral
develops and may exist at definite intervals of pH and rH. Two
mutually exclusive associations of minerals were recognized in the
first phase of authigenic generation in the sandstones and siltstones:
1) zeolites (analcimie and morcienite); and 2) quartz and alkalic
feldspars. Later mineral growths of chloritej dolomite, and clear
crystals of calcite are found in both associations of authIgenic
minerals. The development of iron hydroxides, later aalcltet gyp3tulq
and, in places, jarosite is found principally J'14n secondary pores in
the rocks and apparnntly represents new formatlons In the zone of
weathering. The minerals Viet formed from the liquid phase In the
sandstones and siltstones, and also their alteration In tho course of
time, were determined by the composition and correntration of the
salt-water solutions in the basin of sediment accumalations, by the
nature of the minerals in the clays, carbonates, and other finely
dispersed sediments, by the underlying and overlying nandy and silty
beds, and by the seepage of water through the formation. The frag-
mental material takes part in the formation of ~aathigenie minerals
in the sandy and silty rocks when the sandy and. sillt;y particles are

ABSTRACT: The problem of the time indication mentivied in the title is
of great significance both practically and- theoretically. In
order to determine this, the~authors have studiod the cl=acter
of the correlation between petroleum and 'the epigene minerals.
Samples of petroleum containing rocks of -the larfest petroleum
fields in the Volgo-Urallskaya (Volga-Dral) region servedfortIds

Yablonovyy and Zollnyy.ravinto.Prom there came the quartz
sandstones of the Pashiyokaya suite, whila samples of Lower
Carboniferous rooks came.from lukhanovo. The clastic me,terial
of the sand and "a1puritic" rocks is almost exclusively formed
Card 1/4 by quartz (95-98 %). Only non-clayey varieties were studied

whose cement consists of epigene minerals. Most of the
reservoirs investigated had high effective porosity values
(P eff m '17-22 %). There were also, however, sandstones with
a slight P4ff inlue,,and even impermeable varieties. The roll
played by the individual4pigene minerals in the cementation
of the non-clayey varieties of sandatono and "alourite" io
different. Regenerated quartz takes th6 first and moot im or-
p
tant place; it generally penetrates through the entire rook.
Other epligene minerals occur only as loaal precipitations and
have a limited distributior. The epigarko quftrtz is mostly
precipitated as a regeneration overgrowth of various thick-
nesses. Xt often binds only the clastic grains and only allghtbr fills
the pore space. Carbonates (calcite and dolomite) as well as
anhydritop cement the sandstones and 11-alourites" only super-
ficially. As a rule, all of the mineralis mentioned corrode the
clastic and regenerated quartz. Often they replace it com-
pletely, in which case they indicate a basic cementation type.
The genesis of the epigene minerals ID briefly discussed. If

precipitation of the remaining minerals agroon well with their
increasing solubility Ths~rsgeneratiotl prooooo is discunned.
The analysis of the Krmation sequenco"of the epigene mineralis
in quartz sandstones and !'aleuritits" has shown that the last
minerals precipitated (th* carbonates 4nd avhydriten) represent
new formations which or4onated at conbiderable depths* Pe-
troleum filled all of the-freely Interconnecting pore channels
in all sanples of sandstones and "aleuritee" which were already
earlier cemented by epigene minerals. The form of the petroletim
inclusions is determined here by the morphology of the pore
space. As a rule$ epigene minerals contain no petroleum in-
clusions; at most they have thin petroleum films on the contact
of the quartz graina with the opigene darbo"te and anhydrite
cement In fractures and Individual calolte, dolomite, and
anhydrite crystals. This can be utilisod as an indication that
-the petroleum has not filled the pore npaces until after the
lprecipital.lion of the entire complex of spigene minerals.
Card 3/4 Consequently the petroleum has a youngor age. By comparison

TITLEs Determination of the Evaporation Kineticai~*nd Vapor Tension
of Metallic Powders
PERIODICALt Zairodskaya laboratoriya? '1960, Vol 26, rfr~ #2 j pp' 177 - 179
ABSTRACTt A inethod and apparatua for determining lthr.- e-vapeiration kine-
tics and vapor tension of m#tallic powders, have been developed.
The method is baeed upon the continnous,Otermination of the
electric conductance of a metal film condensed in a high
vacuum on a cooled glaw lamella. It iv possible to study, on
the apparatug denoribod, thb effectii of the h,tatlng temper-
atuxe, surface condition of the metallio'powdor, preliminary
treatment, degree of dispersion etc., upom the evaporation
kinetics,, The metallic powder is evaporated (fig 1, scheme of
the apparatus) bj meana of a heated tunn~iiiten (or aolybdemum)
lamella- The evaporating ourfaeo is 2 x 2 rm2_ The hPater is
fed by means of a "Teala" atabild'.7.!-jr. Tho above-mentioned glans

2 -,, 2 cm . The glass lamella also carries two copper electrodes
produced by evaporating copper, which serve for measuring the
eloctric resistance of the condensed met&I film. A vacuum of up
to 2-10'6 torr is produced by an RVN-20 IkFo-vaouum pump and a
TsIfL-100 diffusion pump. The apparatus doboribod possesses two
valves and two RVN-20pxmp;s.The distance botween evaporator and
glass lamella is fixed close enough to avaure that sufficient
metal vapor condenses but far enough to prevent irregularities
from forming on the metal film surface. The diotribution of the
condeneate is calculated from an equation (1) and can be re-
presented graphically (Fig 2). The specific flow of the con-
densate is determined from the following e(via-'ttions

TITLEs Diffusion of Chromium Through Its Oxide
PERIODICALs Ukrainskiy khimicheskiy zhurnal, 1960, Vol.. 26, No. 4,
pp. 429-431
TEXT: The authors wanted to determine the diffusion ooefficlent of
chromium through its oxides Their method (Ref. 6) permits a direot
determination of the stream of chromium atoms which diffuse tbrough
the oxide and evaporate. This determination was oarried'out In vacuo
at 1100, 1150, 1200, and 125000- The required oxide layer was produced
by oxidation of am electrolytic chromiumpowder (particle di=eter 5014
in air at 7000C. It was v6.5-lo-5 cm thi%k. rig. I shown the results
of r2eamurement of the electrical conductivity of the layer of condensed
chromium atoms. The quantity of the flow of chromium atone was determined
from the inclination of the straight lines found at different temperatures.
A table (P- 431) contains the diffusion coefficients D of' chromium
through its oxide layer calculated from the flows determined, and from
Card 1/2

the concentrations indicated by K. 11auffe and,T. Block (Hof.,5), On the
basis of this table, the authors plotted tho diagram log D * f(I/T)
(Fig. 2). The activation energy of the chromium diffusion throagh ita
oxide layer can be determined from this diagram (86 700 cal/g,-ntom). Thca,
the authors consider the chromium diffusion through an -oxide layer provod
by experiment. Apparently, the diffusion rate of the ch-romium atomu
determines the oxidation rate in chromium or strongly cbromium-containing
alloys. The diffusion coefficients determined by the authors are similar
to those of thoron through Or203 (Ref- 7). There are 2 figuron and 7
