Abstract : The Intramural nerve organ of the heart vas studied in
36 cases of hypertension and 20 cases of atherosclerosis.
Atrophic and sclerotic changes were chwacterized by thic-
kening of the perinurium, fucheinophilia of the nerve
stems and some ganglion cells, shrinkage of the latter,
and by an increase in the number of satellite cells. More
acute changes consisted of increased argyrophilla, tortuo-
sity, appearance of varicose thickenings and edema in the
neuroplasm, and granulax and lumpy disintegration - of

nerve fibers, synapses, and nerve endings. Reactive chan-
ges, which were particularly pronounced in myocardial in-
far--t, manifested themselves by the presence of binuclear
gEmg1ion cells and pear-shaped thickenings on dendrites,
nerve fibers and nerve endings. The described changes are
not specific for the diseases that were studied. Beside
the changed nerve fibers and endings, the normal structu-
:re of the heart nerve organ was frequently found.
