by improving tho trazining of specialists in the mechanization
of recording and! calculating work. In the 1957/58 school
year, students lipent 1,500 workinrr days at the 4 plant3 -
"Kalibr"t "Yrasrtyy Proletariy", imeni M.I. Yalinin and the
Presnenskiy mashino3troitel'nyy 7,avod ("Presnenskiy" 2a-
chine Building Plant) carrying- out graduation tasks or
participating it the r;alization of projects. Over 150 stu-
dents studied initial documentation at 53 plants; in the
course of 2 monthop 160studento participated in compilint,
the RSFSR balame of national economy at the Gtatisticlieskv,,e
upravleniye (Ote,tistical Administration), staying there for

mentioning: In 19,57 and 1958 the Chair daveloned ana brouffrit
into use a relay a,ttachment to the sorting machine S45-6 de-
signed to control logically incompatible indicatlions contained
in repliesto questions of the census sheet. T"his device
effectively helps~to withdraw perforated cards containing con-
tradictory data transferred from census sheets. For the pro-
cessing of the All.-Union census data, 120 machines with relay
attacIzients were nanufactured. and installed in 57 mechanical
computer t~tations of the republic and oblast! statistical ad-
ministrations, and in the Tsentrallnaya mashinosche:tnaya
stantsiya (Central ~,',echanical Oomputer Station) of the All-Union
census. The econiDmical effect of applyin.-. the i1tt.-chtinn'u- will
amount to 6 million rubles according to the cniculatiois of the
Otdel melchanizatali Upravleniya po provedeniyu Vsesoyuzno~,- pere-
pisi nasoleniya T33V 3S3R (Department for laeohanizizit, the Admini-
stration of the All-Union Census TsSU USSR). The otudentsl work
in desiL-,ning and applying new engineering methods deserves spe-

To Establish a Vuz a Mechan ized Accounting Plant
in making logical schemes for an electronic machine used for
processing statistics. This yeart.the electronic ciphering
machine -aill be assembled, and in lc'~60 a pro.-ram for the pro-
cessing of material will be composed. The author explains how
the problem of finding work for the students was solved by send-
ing all 4th course students to the Central Mechanical Comi?uter
Station* where the students have good possibilities for scienti-
fic viork. Holuever, it complicates the proper airangement of
training. This could probably be overcome if large non-stpto-
financed.mechani.cal computer plants were united with vuzes there-
by establishing a plant-vuz. Their training and production sche-
dule will change from time-to time in accordance -with require-
ments in specialists for one or the other branch# Since the
Central Mechanioal Computer Station will finish processing the
basic indices of the All-Union census by the end of the year,
the author suggests that the station be reorganized into a me-
chanical computer plant and a plant-ruz established.

Improvements for reduction of the cost of drilling in
various oil fields of the Tuymazaburneft' trust are de-,
scribed. The improvements are related mainly to adoption
of modern technological processes and modification of
outdated technical standards and regulations. Water flush-
Ing in drilling is widely used instead of the drilling
fluids with mud in order to increase the speed and to
reduce the required power for pumping. The hydraulic re-
sistance of water is about 30% less than that of drilling
mud fluids and the power for water pumps is about half as
large as that for the drilling fluids. Comparative drill-
ing operation data are presented in two tables.

~TSXTi :The object of the investigation described in the
present paper was to determine this endurance limit of a titanium
aLloy 9r3-1,l(VT3-l) and two nickel-base alloys of the9Ob(7(F-T()-J 7)
and XG(oK (ZhS6K) type, and to study the effect of the frequency
of alternating loads-on this property. The main shortcoming of
time conventional fatigue testing methods is that the test conditions
blear little relation to the conditions obtaining in service; in
addition-,' they are time-consuming,, 4-5 months of continuous work
being required to construct on fatigue curve. It was for these
reasons that a high frequency testing machine (VIU-1 MAI-VIAM) was

used in the present investigation. The machine (whose detailed
deacription is given) is of the reconance type and was designed
foil single-plans bending fatigue-tests which can be carried out
under the conditions of both imposiid and resonance vibrations,
The vibrations, generated by a powerful electroma -gnetic system
consisting of an amplifierand a tzansformer,are transmitted to
tho test piece through a heavy beam 9 capable of producing,alternat-
ing loads which are sufficiently high to break standard test
pieces -or even actual components, atuch as turbine blades. The
auxiliary equipment consists of a microscope used for setting the
te4t piece and for measuring the vibration amplitude which at high
tetaperaturei .is measured with tho cid of,* cathetometer, and an
electrical resistance furnace for high temperature work, Befora
te0ting,the test pieces were heat,,treatedl-according to schedules
;iiren in Table 2. The tests were'earried out on cylindrical test
pi-eces.- of -the- cantilever type. Tho gauge length of the- test

in~the process of testing, a special high-temperatureresistance furnace
was used which is also described. Thermal calibration of the specimens
wIas made before testing. After the mechanical treatment, the depth of
work hardening and the residual stresses were determined., the former by
an X-ray method and the latter by N.N, Davidenkov's methodi details
of the results are given. The specimens were tested for endurance on
bending, with the-frequency of resonance vibrations of the order of
850,-1000 cycles, at 8500C.' Graphs of the results are given. It was found
that the endurance depends on the method of treatmew and is increased
by finishing methods which reduce the residual tens[le stresses and the
