TEXT: This is a brief survey of the life and work of Nikolay Niko-
layevich Zubov, one%of the founders of the science of oceanoirra-
phy. Before 7forld Var I, Zubov graduated in 1910 from the Naval
Academy (Hydrographic Division), and in 1912 he attended at 'L'-.he
Geophysical Institute at Bergen in Noniay an oceanographic course.
Until 1928, Zubov was mainly concerned with naval tactical re-
search. From 1928 to 1948 he was directly concerned with establish-
ing the-directorate of the Ilvdrometeorological Survey. During this

period he managed to bring about the establishment of the firEit
Department of Oceanology in the world at the Moscow Hydrometeoro-
logical Institute, where he was active for many years. The authoro
point out Zubov's wide range of scientific interests. His works
include mono raphs and textbooks, such as, for example TilorskiYe
vody i l1dy ~Sea Water and Ice), Lldy arktiki (Arctic Ice) and
Dinamicheskaya okeanologiya (Dynamic Oceanology), historic-geogra-
phic treatises of which the most important is the fundamental book
