Parr i states that in neoplastic cases a blueODloration appears in the urine on ad-
dition of cone. HCl with arsenic acid and xylene with itoamyl alcohol. Trials of
this testin 217 cases are report here. It was found that the percentage of positive
results in neoplastic diseases did not significantly differ from that in other diseases,
except. that it was significantly lower than in- early pulmonary tb. In view of the
high perventage of positives in pulmonary tb, the specificity of the test should be
studied on a larger scale in various forms ol'tuberculosi3.

TITLE: Quantitative changes of extracellular water during
radiation sickness

T'l]'A'12: 26 male and female rabbits weighing 1800-4300 g
each were irradiated with X-rays, using a ".1estinghouse sct, at 200
kvi 15 ma, with 1 mm thick Cu and Al filters, at a dose rate of
10.6 rimin, from a distance of 80 cm. The animals were (livided into
4 groups: 6 received a dose of 200 r (group 1), 6 a dose of 500 r
(II), 7-a dose of 800 r (III) and 7 a dose of 1000 r (IV). The
quantiti-es of extracellular water (21-7) were measurcd before and on
the 3rd, 10th and 20th days after irradiation, using a modification
of the NaWS method of Mlorachevskiy et al. In grOUD-S I and 11, the
M-1 contents diminished appreciably on the 3rd day, the decrease
being greater than the loss in body weight, indicating that water

was absorbed by the cells (swelling). A reverse effect was observed

on the loth day, the contents becoming slightly hic -rher than bef or.c.,
irradiation; this is tal-.cn as evidence of osmotic changes within the
cells. A slight decrease of both M~! and body weight was again obscr-
ved on the 20th day. The changes vierc! more pronounced in group 11.
Three animals of group III lost weight on the 3rd day, by loss of
cellular and extracellvlar water, the loss of E'J being far in c.-.-ccss
of the loso of body weight. Cell swelling was obscrvcd in this sub-
group. Similar though less pronoLnced changes (no cell --vellii-r)
took place in the remaining animals, with the exception of 1 rabbit
who showed an increase in 1-:71 on the third day. Little or no rcver-
sal of this effect occurred on the loth day; on the 20th day the
loss of body weight exceeded the loss of In grou-p IV, loss of
cellular gain of c.-ctracellular water were obSlervecL Oil th-- 3rd

ABSTRACT: Special studies were made in 1952 of the structure with
the depth of some regions of Western Turkmenia in conjunction
with detailed investigation of the seismicity of Turkmenia.
For this purpose a method of deep seismic sounding was used
which was proposed by G. A. Gamburtsev and developed in the
Geophysics Institute, Ac.Sc. U.S.S.R. (Geofizicheskl~.
Institut AN SSSR) under his leadership (RefB.1 and 2 The
fundamental task of these investigations was to clarify the
character of the deep boundaries of division in the re6ion
of grouping of the main geological structures which occur
in the region under consideration. These structures include
the mountain ridges Kopet-Dag, Bolshoy Balkhan, the
Card 1/ 5 Predkopetdagskiy bend and the Trans-.Caspian lowland. Under
"deep boundaries" the authors understand boundaries located

the field work was carried out,under the supervision of

ABSTRACT: The author reviews seismic data on the structure of the
Earth's crust. lie considers the results of detailed studies
made in various regions of the USSR by means of plutonic
seismic research. In this connection, the names oi the
following scientists are mentioned; V.V. Belousov, Yu.N.
Godin, V.N. Krestnikov, P.N. Kropotkin, M.V. Muratov, V.Ye.
Khain, G.A. Gamburtsev, R.M. Demonitskaya, L,.Ye. Aronov,

Yu.V. Tulina. The author comes -,o the conclusion that data
on the structure of the crust ob,:ained by seismic and gravi-
metric research make it possible to divide the crust ac-
cording to thickness and structu:7e into continental and
oceanic zones. Research on the uontinents showed that the
thickness of the crust varies in platform and folding areas.
Results obtained during a more detailed study indicate the

plex process linked with the formation of geological
structures.

employed mostly over large territories, mountains, etc.
The seismic survey is based on the separate tracks with
distances between them much larger than the wavelength.
This method gives only the first three of the advanta[Ses
listed above.
C) Pointed Registration (Figure 1, I-C) gives the time of
wave travel only by offering the second and third of the
above advantages. This method is employed with the stronE
detonations.
A quite different method is obtained when the mobile
detonation points and the stationary registration stations
are applied. This method can be divided into two main
classes, depending whether one or more points of registrrition
are used.
1) One Point of Registration.
a) Continuous shooting (Figure 1, II-1-A) can be employed
together with the continuous profile mthod. This method
is not largely used due to the difficulties of obtaining
the detonations frequently enough.
Gard2/10b) Partly Continuous Shooting (Figure 1, II-l-B) gives

the first three advantages listed above with the possibility
of obtaining a partial wave odograph. It can be employed in
place of the continuous profile method. However, this
method is not much in use owing to man technical difficulties.
C) Pointed Shooting (Figure 1, II-l-C5 has only the first
advantage, i.e. it gives the total travel time of one wave.
2) Multi-point Registration.
This method can be used effectively when there is a
sufficient frequency of the point-to-point registrations -
then the third advantage could be obtained.
Figure 1 shows the above systems grouped as follows: the
top row - stationary point of detonation. The middle and
lower rows - mobile points of detonation. The left column
gives the most efficient methods; the continuous profile
and continuous shooting - the right column - the least
efficient methods: the pointed profile and pointed shooting.
The midile column represents the intermediate methods: the
partly continuous profile and partly continuous shooting.
When the detonation and registration points are situated
on land, the best methods employed are 1-A,B. When the
both points are at sea the methods II-1 and 11-2 are the

best (especially II-l-C). The method II-2-C is the best
for the work carried out partly on land-, partly at sea.
Two methods (II-1-0 and (II-2-C) were applied in the S.D.S,
of'. the Oaspia-n Sea in 1956 described below.
Methods of Observations - usually a greater area can be
covered by the mobile detonations method at sea. This,
coupled with the better odogrephs, better interpretation of
the longitudinal and other profiles and the possibility of
carrying the survey with fewer points of detonation
(Figure 2), decided in employing this method for S.D.S.
of. the Caspian Sea. Several other points were observed:
the length of profiles (the length of odographs) was taken
in relation to the depth of the sounding datum, which was
deeper on land (30 - 40 km) and shallower (10-15 k-m) at sea.
The distance from detonation to registration points was
kept .4 250-300 km on land and 80-100 km at sea.
Distance between the points of detonation and tLj observation
ships was chosen to allow a group correlation between waves.
This distance was changed along the line of profile. The
