The antioxidant additives tested were p-hydroxydiphenyls, ionol, and AzNII-11. The stability of the transformer oils toward the additives was deter- mined. Adsorption-refined oil was found to have the best response to the inhibi- tors. While the addition of 0.1% ionol to transformer oil obtained from Buzovna petroleum by refining with 8% acid decreased the deposit by a factor of 4 and the acid number by a factor of 6-7, the addition of the same amount of ionol to oil ob- tained from the same crude by adsorption refining decreased the deposit by a factor Card 1/2 7Z- L 22689-66 ACC NR: AP6006932 -of 1B.'and the acid number by a factor of 26. The better response of the adsorp- tion-refined oil is attributed to its small content of tars. Because of its scarcity and high cost, attempts have been made to find means of roducing the amount of ionol added to JJK_8. T was found that this can be dono by It carrying the purification of the oil further, i. a., increasing the amount of acid, further purifying commercial 19-8 with gumbrin and using selective and adsorption moth ods of purification. Specifically, the amount of ionol can be reduced from 0.6 to 0.4% by the following methods: (1) increasing the amount of H2SQ4 in the purification of MK-8 oil from 8 to 10%; (2) additionally purifying MK-8 with 4% gumbrin or powdered silica-alumina catalystp (3) preparing M-8-type oil by purification with 100% furfur- al and 5% gumbrin. The moat practical method is the improvement of the sulfuric acid purification by increasing the amount of acid to 10%. This has resulted in a 29% do- creaso in the cost of production of MK-8 oil. The adsorption method was found to be the most effective. The oil produced by this method of refining possesses high antioxidation and anticorrosion properties due to the lower tar content.
