ABSTRACT: Depending on the method used, certain investigators have concluded that the
limb of the lunar disk at different librations Is described well by a circle of a single radius;
others believe that the circles at different librations have different radii and their centers
do not coincide; still others feel that the limb of the lunar disk cannot be described by a
circle and other curves must be found. The authors report an investigatioa using photo-
graphic observations of the moon made with an astrograph (D = 400 mm, F :-- 5, 500 n1m)
having an automatically moving cassette. . Five photographs (Nos. 308, 329, 354, 355 and
356) were used. The eastern and western limbs respectively, were Illuminated on photo-
graphs 308 and 329. Photographs 354-356 were obtained Immediately before a partial lunar
eclipse. Radius vectors and position angles of points on the limb of the lunar disk were
measured relative to a central mark. In addition, on plates 308 and 329, the rectangular

Icoordinates of five craters were measured. The measured radius vectors and crater Co-
ordinates were corrected for Instrument errors and the measurements were freed of thu
influence of differential refraction. On plates 354, 355 and 356, obtained near the time of
ithe full moon, the measurements were made along the entire limb of the hular disk (120
points). The measured radius vectors were reduced to find the most probable circle best
coinciding with the measured points on the limb. Five series of irregularities of the lunar
limb were obtained. The constructed profiles wer6 compared with corresponding profiles
from the Weimer Atlas, as shown in Figures 1 and .2 of the Enclosure; the agreement is
considered quite good. Curves were also constructed using these data, but they failed to
demonstrate convincingly the absence of ellipticity of the limb. The authors therefore
computed the parameters of the most probable ellipse best coinciding with the points of the
limb. This approach failed to demonstrate reliably that the lunar disk Is elliptical. Ap-
PlIcation of Whittaker's method for smoothing irregularities of the limb revealed that re-
presentation of the figure of the disk by the most probable ellipse is formal and completely
inadequate. The conclusion is drawn that elevations along the limb should be referred to a
circle whose center coincides with the projection of the lunar denter of mass. Orig. art.

Chicago, 1963), served as the basis for the cumulative catalog of space coordin-
ates of 160 base points presented In the article. Initial results of a solution
of a concrete selenodesic problem are presented, and their accuracy is dis-
cussed. Calculations show that the center of mass of the moon is located somewhat'

ABSTRACT: Compression 1by a shock wave in a nouns of obtainint.- high
pressures and high temperatures which cannot be obtained by
other methods# The investigation of transparent bodies per-
mits an imr%ediate deternination of tenperature by measuring
the bri-,htness of the body compressed by the shock wave.
After an intense compression (by which a temperature of some
thousands of degrees is attained) an initialiy transparent
subitance becomes opaque and radiates intensely. This phenom-
enon io cattood by a di3placemont of the electron levels and
by an excitation of the electrons. The radiation of the

the riot yet compressed transparent oubutance and it was record-
ed by photochronographs in 2 parts I the urectrum:
A - 4020 R (blue) and red (A - 6000 ). The authors determin-
ed the temperature in polymethyl metacrylate (c,-H. 02)n
(plexiglass) of an initial density of 1,18 -/cm3. The veloctV
of the shock wave was 16,5 klm/sec. 3In th,. compressed sj~te,
the density was equal to 3 ,15 ("/cm , pressure was 2.10
dyne/cm. By 3 experiments the following quantities were de-
termined: the.brif,-Iitness temperature deduced from the intensi-
ty -of tile r8diation in the red part of the spectrum
(6500 + 500 K) and the color temperature, deduced from the
ratio of the intensities in the 0red and in the blue parts
of the spectrum (11 000 + 1 000 K). For the energy of tile 12
compressed plexiglass, t-ho value E P(V - V)/2 = 0,5 -10

dyne/cmz and the thermal energy of the atoms amounts to

is being used to an ever greater extent for the coating of
various corrosion-renistant iletal oblects. Since (I) does
not dissolve in organic solvents several la,,;ers of co,-Ltir.,,,T
vrith (I)-sunponsions ( in different solvents) can be obtained
(Ref 1). Polymeric particles are riolten onto the surfftCe
at 2700 so that they form the coating. llo,;.,e-.,cr, (I) is still
rather viscous at 2700 and therefore cannot fill up little
cavitien in the -,etal sur'acc, which re2ults in lefects in
the coating. These defects can be eliminated by treritino
pulverized (I) ..ith a blast burner (Refs 3,,!). The defective

TITLE: Simplified Method of Producing a Ftoroplast-I Anticorrosive
Coating

TEXT: The authors report on their simplified methods of producing protec-
tive coating of Ftoroplast-3, which grant metal surfaces a good protection
from corrosion by concentrated acids, alkalis, H 2021 bromine, and others,
They describe the hitherto usual procedure, developed by GIPKh (State In-
stitute of Applied Chemistry) together with NIIPP (Scientific Research In-
stitute of Plastic Materials), 'which was simplified in the following way:
a) A method of applying Ftoroplast-3 in the form of a finely disperse
powder by means of a flame was developed. The powder passes through an
acetylene-air flame from a burner of the type Y014-4 (UPN-4) i is intensively
heated oand partly molten. When striking a metal surface heated to
240-27~ C, the powder sticks to it. A 70-80 p thick powder layer is formed

in this way (instead of 10-1~ 14 in the hitherto usual method). It is molten
to a homogeneous film at 270 C within I h, This procedure permits the ap-
plication of up to 200-220 ~ thick layers in three operations (instead of
'12-116 operations in the old procedure). The authors recommend this method
for the production of coatings for pipe coils, tubes, and mixers, and lin-
ings for apparatus covers and open tanks. b) Further, the authors tested
the effect of plasticizers on the quality of Ftoroplast-suspension coats to
prevent cracking. These plasticizers were fluorine-chlorine-carbon oils and
lubricants:

Among these plasticizers, liquid No. 12 yielded positive results (anount
2.0-2-5% by weight of the suspension). No. 12 i.- obtained in the produc-

concerning coatings plasticized with No. 12 and not plasticized. To prevent
the formation of corrosion products due to a certain acidity of No. 12,
the authors recommend to apply the first two layers without a plasticizer.
Another prophylactic method, VTU 30007-58 of the Lensovnarkhoz (Leningrad
Council of National Economy), is based on the admixture (1.5% by weight of
the dry suspension residue) of nitrite dicyclohexylamine as a corrosion
inhibitor. Ftoroplast-3 suspensions are suited for the production of out-
side and inside coats on the devices mentioned. There are 1 table and 9 ref-
erences: 4 Soviet and 1 British.

TEXT: The method of applying fluoroplastic-3 and fluoroplastic-31"I has
been improved: (1) A single fluoroplastic-3-layer is 15 - 20 p thick;

number of layers to be reduced to 5 - 7 by reason of the layers being
thickened to 40 - 50 4. For sandblasted steel surfaces it is recommended

fluoroplastic-3. YnH(UPN) devices of the V.NII1xvtogen have been used.for

and the flame is so adjusted a.,~ to soften the spraycd powder without
meltinC it. The object is then kept at 2700C for one hour. A single
layer may Inave a thickness of 60 - 80 P. This method has been developed
for objects with a minimum, liameter of 3)0 - 400 mm. Such coatines have
the same mechanical and che-lical -jropdrties as others applied by brushing.
(3) One difficulty is that every fluoroplast layer Kao to be melted under
thermostatic controt rt 2700C- In I~i~)q the Urallski-y idninicheskiy institut
(Ural Institute oil (.hamistry, UNIKhVII) Sverdlovsk, developed a method o
heating smaller objects to the required temperature by induction. Heating
to 270 - 2800C takes 160 - 2VID seconds; conditions: 25-25-5 v, 300- W6
a, 2.4 kw. The development was continued in 1960. (4) Pluoroplastic-3LI
protects against corrosion up to 1500C, fluoroplastic-3, however, only to
80 - 900C, as cry3taliization then begins. The following results were
obtained with fluoroplastic-31'4: Fluoroplastic-5,11 may be applied as a 3 %
suspension in alcohol, after which -t is dried in air and heated for 30
to 60 minutes according to size. The layer thickness suited best is 300-
400 4. Sloa cooling in a Ifurnace is better than quenchin- in cold water

plastic-3:,T coatinga at 100, 140, and 170'C '."as studied. At 1400C, and
especially at 1700C, the coating,- ni;surncs a otable structure which remaino
unchanged for inonths, even at 1000C. Treatment at IOOOC reduces adhesion
even after few hours. (6) The chemical realsti'vity of fluoroplastic-3M
coatinUz was determined: for 10 months at 500C it is resistant to con-
centrated hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric acid$, and for 12 months at
1400C to concentrated sulfuric acid. (7) An addition of nanometer liquid
and liquid No. 12 (mixture 04' 0.5 % each) allows an increase in the layer
thickness of fluoroplastic-314 to 50 IL. The Shchelkovskiy khimicheskiy
zavod (Shchelkovo Chemical 71orkc) and other works have started the
industrial production of such coatin'-q. There is 1 table.

ABSTRACT: The authors study the effect which the shape and relative location of the
mirrors in a gas laser have an the emission power. A helium-neon laser with exter-
nal mirrors operating on a wavelength of 1.15 u was used. The internal diameter of
the cell was 15 mm and the length of the resonator could be changed from 89 to 300
cm by moving one of the mirrors. Three series of experiments were conducted. In
the first series, the emission power was measured as a function of the distance be-
tween the mirrors for a resonator with one plane and one spherical mirror in which
a single maximum was observed at a distance between mirrors corresponding to the
focal length. In the second series of experiments, two spherical mirrors were used

with differing radii of curvature: 2.021 m and 6.650 m. A single emission maximum
.was observed at a mirror distance of 1.37 m. In the third series, two spherical
with identical radii of curvature were used and emission maxima were ob-
,served at intermirror distances equal to the radius of curvature or to half the ra-
dius of curvature. A wide maximum was also observed at appro-iimately 0.7 times the
radius of curvature. The following factors are considered with regard to their ef-
fect on variation In the emission power of the laser: 1. a change in diffraction
losses; 2. a change in the spectrum of the emission frequencies; 3. a-change in the

ABS-L?J,CT: The study of the magnetic susceptibility of semiconductors is of
special interest oince it provides information on their zone structure, i.e. the
effective mass of current carriers, the nature of impurity centers and also to
sorre extent the nature of the chemical bond. It was concluded from previous in-
vestigations that the magnetic susceptibility of CdS is greatly dependent an tht
method of preparation of the samples, Measurements were made of the absolute
value cf magnetic susceptibility of a single crystal of pure C4S as well as CdS
doped with inditmn and copper in the 77 ~ 700K temperature range. It was found that
the magnetic susceptibility of pure CdS gingle crystals ic essentially independent
of temperature within this temperature range. Its value of -0.426-rtO-6 at 300K is
taken as the value of the lattice susceptibLlity for CdS. Calculations were also
de of the molar susceptibility, which are in good agreement with experimental

data. Compdrison of susceptibility values calculated by the Kirkwood formula
with experimental values makes. it possible to conclude thac the GdS crystal has
primarily ionic bonding. The, magnetic susceptibility of the p-type crystals shows
a decreaGe in diamagnetism with increasing temperature, which probably results
fron the interaction between valence zones of the crystal. "The authors express

ABSTRWT: Films of polyvinylehloride-w-ere irradiated with a quartz-mercury
DIRSh-WO lamp. By fastening the films J_n front of a plane reflecting mirror in
a system vith spherical reflecting mirror and lonsos, photodeCradation was
affected in four hourg. The use of a heat filter permitted the entire process
to be carried out at room temperature. To insure uniform irradiation, the film
was turned constantly during exposure-(at 2 ropame)v Haasurementz in the M
re'gion of the spectrum were made from /+000 to 400 cm-1 on a UP-10 spectroz--.eter,
and -in the visible range from 400 to 750 M~L on an SF-2M spectrometer. The filmsp
15-20 m1k thick, were made from a 4-5% solution of tatra'Vdrofuran on glass
plates. Homogeneous and transparent filwz were obtainid or-ly by using sma.U
crystallizers with ground glass tops having small openings in the conter for
