contains deposits belonging to the upper Middle, possibly;to the
lower Upper Ordovician and to the lower part of the Silur~ian. The
dating of the greater part of this horizon (limestones, calcareous
sandstones, conglomerates) as upper Middle and lower Upper Ordovician
is based on the brachiopods Platystrophia lutkewitshi Al., Nicolella
oswaldi (Buch), Boreadorthis sadewitziensis (Roem.), Dinorthis

insularis hichw, and on remains of trilobites similar to Chasmops
maxi-m-'achm. It is proposed that the term "Molodova hori7z-on-w--be
preserved for this part of the section. The author points out that
the pebble conglomerates, earlier referred to this horizon, have
been proved to be of various ages. Part of them occur in the lower
part of the overlying Kitaygorod horizon and belong to the Silurian.
The author's study has led to the recognition of a break between
the Ordovician and the Silurian in the Dnestr region.

ABSTRACT#- In Soviet-built electric lo-omotives the single-,-)j':Lase
line current is rectified b,; means of full-wave
rectifiers, using as rectifiers water-cooled single-
anode ignitrons with sealed envelopes. The traction
motors of these IDComotives are series-excited DO
motors. In spite of fitting special smoothing chokes,
there are considerable pulsations in the rectified
voltage. For instance, in the electric locomotivos of
the types NO and N-60, the basic pulsation wave (3.00 c.p.s.)
under the rated a-)naitions reaches a value of 30% and at
high speeds and 1,)w current intensities, the pulsations
are more intensiv,-~ still. The current pulsations
resulting from th,:, pulsations in the input voltage bring

the flux of the armature reaction and the flux o1' the
additional pulse involving additional losses,more
intensive heating and redW:ed efficiency and pcorer
commutation. For investigating these phenomena, the
laborat.o.ry of the Novocherl:assk Electric Locomotive
Works has Ca.rried out a series of experiments and
developed special test -1ircuits. Development of these
zircuits presented certain difficulties which were
aggravated b,7 the fact that; the problem has not been
dealt with in literature. In this paper, the basic
results are givea of experimental investigations. In
the experiments, two machines were used, one operating as
a generator, the other as a. motor. In one ser:Le-- of
experiments the inotor was cperated on DC with a super-
impcsed AC component. In the second series of emperi-
ments a reat'gfie-1 voltage was used. The temperature
rise in the windings as well as the quality of commu-
Card2/4 tation were inve.3tigated in both series of experiments.

In Figure 3 the limits are graphed of the comm-atation
of the traction motor for irarJous degrees of pole- shunting
(0 = 90%, 55% ani 36%) as a function of the pulsE.tion
coefficient and the current; intensity. In Figure 4 the
dependence is graphed of the transformer e.m.f. on the
pulsation coe.L"fi~:-,ient of the supply current. On the
basis of the obtained results, the author conclud.es that
feeding of DC motors with pulsating (rectified) voltages
leads to the following:- overheating of the arnature
winding is lap to 15% higher than in the case of feeding
mdthmappropriate DO voltage; commutation becomes poorer
the deterioration in the commutation is not influenced
greatly by the t)~ansformer e.m.f., which is induced in
the short-t.- ircui*,-,ed sections of the armature, but it is
affeeted to a groat extent by the non-coincidence in
phase of the cciuuitation flux and the flux of the
armature reaction.
There are 4 figures and I table.
