TITLE: Development of Electron Accelerators at the Tomsk Polytechnical Institute PERIODICALs Izvestiya vysshikh uchebnykh zavedeniy, Blektromekhanika, 1959, Nr 1, pp 121-121+ (USSR) ABSTRACT: Work on electron accelerators at the Tomsk Polytechnical Institute was.begun in 191+6. The aim was to produce an inexpensive betatron installationg simple in manufacture and operation. In spite of the fact that many scientists and engineers maintained that the betatron must be supplied at a highly stable voltage, the authors developed a betatron using a supply derived from the a.c. mains. Changes in frequency and voltage had to be compensated automatically, and experiments have shown Card that this is possible. The fact that the bet4itron was 1/3 supplied from industrial-frequency mains meant that the installation was very Inexpensive. The second im t Pr 66536 SOV144-59-1-16/21 Development of Electron Accelerators at the Tomsk Polytechnical Institute flaw-detection in order to obtain stereo-photographs. B.A. Konokov and L.S. Sokolov developed methods for the extraction of the electron beam both by deflecting the electrons by an electric field and by removing tho electrons beyond the magnetic field by means of non.- magnetic channels. B.N. Rodimov and others have considered the acceleration process from the theoretical Card point of view. Since 1951+ the Institute has been 3/3 concerned with the development of powerful electron synchrotrons. There are no figures, tables or references. This promotes the supply of positive pulses for heating the cathode in the intervals between the negative pulses, ensuring injection. The Tilament-supply transformer is at zero potential. These characteristics are incorporated in order to simplify-the design of the injector and decrease its size, Ca d 1/2 - ~ : . - . t~ J. ";:,: e, ~, ..- - . . B. - EKSPER.Killit. 1957, 2/4 (3-7) 128 (logs were annesthelized by means of an apparatus with the following special features: (1) Direct current a~d rectangular impulses are used simultaneously. (2)Combined tension ofimpulses is oftbeord, rrof 37-40v. and mean strengthof current 7.4-13 ma.. while the galvanic current remains constant. (3) 'rile subject for elect roiiu rco.%is is included in the cathode circuit. (4) An elect ronic device, part of the generator, produces rectangular impulses. the frequencv of which can be varied from I to 130 cycles per see. and tile duration or which remains under control. (5) Cathode oscillograph provide,, means or cont re I ling I lie shapeand du rat ion of i mpuls - es delivered. (6) An automatic voltage limiter comprising voltage stabilizers and electromechanical relays excludes the animai from the circuit in case of apparatus becoming faulty. (7) An electronic stabilizing device controls the anode voltage of the generator and of the main paths of the current. (8) The amount of current de- livered is controlled by means of oscillograph and other components. Elect ront rcos is occurs in dogs when the current of 100 cycles per see. is slowly increased. In this way, in to- 15 min. (when 0.9-1 ma. is reached) the onset of sleep takes place. Dur- ing the following 20 min. the current is increased to 4-5 ma. in order to produce an- aesthesia, proper. At the beginning of the operation the intensity of tile current is slowly raised to 7-13 ma. (impulses of 40 v.). All the time the negative is applied to the frontal and the positive to the occipital area. No automatic or convulsive movements were observed, nor periods ofapnoea. The depth of aniteRthesia reached allows the performance of laparotomy. amputations and transplantation of linths, interventions on soft tissues without obvious pain reactions shown by the animal. Absence of any influence of electronarcosia on vital functions of the organism was demonstrated by means of physiological. haematological and biochemical investig- ations. References 13. They stress the importimce of plastics in surgery, traumatology and orthopedics and for implantations. At the Tsentrallnyy institut travmatologii i ortopedii (Central Institute of Traumatology and Or-hopedics) the preparations ARR-7 and AKR-10 were developed. They am based on methacrylic me.. thylestEr and are widely used for making protheses of the maxilla, the facial skeleton and skull bones. For the plastica of eye-sockets, ear and nose prothe- ses, plastics EGMIS-12 and AKR-9 are utilized (1. Revzin, V. Marskiy). Some kinds of foem plastics SOV/1?7-58-11-1/50 Possibilities and Ways Of UtiliZirLg Achievements of Chemistry in Medical Practice are used for manufacturing protheses of extremities, lacteal glands, etc,. Many possibilities are, given In utilizing fluid plastics for protecting the skin and treating o en wounds. The preparations REFI-2/10, colloplastics mncentrated colloidal solution of silicon acid sodium salt) are approbated in Soviet clinics for fixing dressings, seizing the skin by dermatomes, etc. The Nauchno-issledovatellskiy in- stitut eksperimentallnoy khirurgicheskoy apparatury i instrumentariya (Scientific-Research Institute of Experimental Surgical Apparatus and Instruments) (NIIEKhAiI) uses acrylates of the new marks 1-53, 2-55 and ST-2a for manufacturing protheses of big joints.
