ABSTRACT: A series of comments on the current state and future
prospects of computers is

presented. Thus, the currently slow readout of words from the
memory (at least 10 ec for
the best ferrite-core specimens) restricts the operating speed of
the machine. whereas modern!-
transistors make it possible to perform operations several times as
quickly and the appli-
cation of the cascade principle of N. 1. Bessonov may accelerate
the performance of arithmetLel
operations by a factor of 5-10. If the number of index registers is
large, address substitution

of instructions is not required; experience in operating the BEW-6
computer, which includes
15 10 index registers, showed that operations with instructions in
this machine are virtually
unnecessary. A major approach toward markedly increasing the
operating speed of computers
is represented by the development of a separate program-storage
element admitting rapid
readout. In general, the division of memory into "numerical"
(active) and "program" (semi-
active) admits different cell arrays in these elements. Further,
operating experience with
single- (BESM-6), doubIL-(Minsk) and triple-(M-2, M-20, BESM-3m)
address computers
shows that triple-address machines substantially reduce the
expenditure of tii e and effort
by the mathematician, sharply increasing the overal productivity of
the man-machine system
Hence the conversion (or return) to triple-address machines is
highly desirab! --. The instrue
ion system of Soviet series-built computers (at least of the
triple-address computers) is
obsolete, and the ways and means of updating it should be discussed
in the press. N. I. Besso-I
nov's commutator should be incorporated in any large computer, since
the s'.L'-.-It additional
expense involved is more than offset by the increased rapidity of
shifts, acceleration of addi-
tion and facilitation of intricate logic operations. The number of
instructions r bsolutely must
include all the elementary machine operations such as transfer from
register ~o register and
logic addition (multiplication) without resorting to the
ferrite-core memory. This will make
possible the direct programming of new machine operations without
readjustli ,- the machine i

and, in the presence of a fast instruction memory, replace
microprogramming. On the other
hand, micivo-ogramming -- in the presence of at least ten fast
registers -- speeds up opera-
tions by a factor of -8-10 with respect to such noncomputational
and Increasingly important .
pioblems as theorylof games, logics pattern recognition, etc.

"Transfusion of Leukocytic Mass During leukopenia and

M. I. Shrago, junior science associate; and L. Ye. Smir-
noval junior scientific associate, Ukrainian Scientific
Research itistitute for Blood Transfusion and Emergency
Surgery, Vrachebnoye Delo, No 10, Oct 56, PP 1105-11o6
A total of 78 transfusions of leukocytes previously preserved
were
performed on 18 patients at 2- to 3-day intervals. The syringe
contained
20-30 ml solution with 1.5-13.2 million leukocytes given
intravenously
and slowly.
Comparative studies before and after this therapy pointed to
some
increase of erythropoiesis and leukopoiesis. Repeated
transfusions pro-
duced no ill effects except in one case.
The authors conclude that therapy by transfusion of leukocytic
mass
to patients suffering from agranulocytosis depends on the fact
thatx if
agranulocytosis is connected with anemia and thrombopenia and
the disease
Is of average severity, transfusion of leukocytic mass has
favorable
effects; but in severe cases where irreversible changes have
occurred in
the blood system such therapy seems ineffective.

The authors give the results of an investigation of the
effectiveness
of thromboplasmin, suggested as a preparation for stopping
hemorrhage by
the Ukrainian Institute of Blood Transfusion (Z. G.
Arlozorov, 1951).
Patients suffering from pupura haemorrhagies and acute
gantroduodenal
hemorrhage vere studied.
After the transfusion of tbrowboplasaino especially

decreased coagulation t1w
and blood flow were noted, these findings being
noted more frequently
than when blood was transfused.
As a result of their findings) the authors recommend
the use of
thromboplasmin as a hemostatic measure in the
treatment of hemophilia
due to tbrowbocytopetils and beworrbaps of other
etiology. (U)

ABSTRACT: The author provides a description of test equipment used
in the
investigation of the flow of an air-water mixture in a vertical

resistance forces and the density of the mixture were measured. A
number of empirical relationships, obtained from an analysis of the
test data, are adduced.

ABSTRACT: This note briefly surinarises the following three
recent
investigations:
A.A. Armand - Investigations on Unstable Heat Exchange. This
-tLIM-11-liv-5-tigation of the behaviour of heat exchangers under
transient conditions. It considers the case of sudden changes
in the temperature of heat-transfer medium at the inlet, in the
temperature of the heating medium and in the rate of flow of
heat-transfer medium.
R.V. Tarasova, A.A. Armand and A.S. Kon1kov - An Investigation
on Heat Transfer in a Tube During Boiling of Underheated Water
and a Steam-water Mixture. This gives an account of work
carried out in 1956-5? in a vertical tube with rising and
falling flows.
A.A. Armand, N.V. Tarasova and A.S. Kon'kov - An Investigation
on Heat Transfer Near the Critical Condition. This is an
account of experimental work carried out in 1953-55 at pressures
Cardl/2 ranging from 22? - 270 atm. It was established that in

super-critical region the heat-transfer coefficient depends
on the temperature and is at a maximum at approximately the
same temperatures as give maximum values of specific heat
at constant pressure and Prandtl number. The usual formula
for heat-transfer from the wall to the steam is not valid in
the range of conditions examined.

planning and design organizations, and for power engineers.
COVERAGE: This collection of 9 articles presents the results of
research conducted
at the All-Union Heat Engineering Institute. Problems of heat
exchange under
high pressure and other special conditions are analyzed.
Attention is devoted
to special cages such as heat exchange from wall to water,
including cases
of ordinary and surface boiling; heat transfer to steam and
water under super-
critical parameters; heat exchange from pipe wall to gas under
high pressure; and
the hydraulic resistance of a heated tube. References are given
