The action (if relatively small doses of X-rays on the
frog retina was studied, with
special attention to the dependence of the size of the
ti-waves of the ERG on the
dose (12, 32 or 130 r.). In control experiments it was
shown that this wave be-
romes progressively smaller (with some fluctuatinn) in
the course of time. Nor-
mally the rurve does not intersect the abscissa until
after 260 min. have passed.
but after X-irradiation this happens more rapidly (91)
min. with 12 r. , 68 min.
with 32 r. and 38 min. with 130 r.). The values then
fall below the abscissa. It
seems as though physical processes underlie the
transformation of the positivc- in-
to a negative potential. Chemical processes are, of
~:Ourse, also involved, in par-
ticul;Lr the transformation of the SH groups of the
protein moiety of the visual pur-
ple int o S-S groups. Von Skramlik - Berlin (11, 12)

ABSTRACT: The development Of Muscular weakness upon
administration of
bretilium' (darentin) and octatenain (guanetedine) can be
explained by at
least three different mochanismst direct suppreselion. by the
preparations of
muscular tissue, disturbance of the excitation transmission in
the region
of neuromascular synapse (curare.-like),, and disturbance of
excitation trans-
mission in the central nervous rings (maphonesinc*type). This
investigation
attempts.to show the point of apj~lication of the action of
brotilium and
octatensin. * Bretilium and octatonsin failed to produce any
direct inhibitory
action on the skeletal muscles of hexobarbital-an.eathMi2ed
cats. The pro-
.parations exhibit a ahort-term otrareform activity and cause
long depression
of reflex contractions. The devolopment of maocular weakness
observed during
the clinical application of britUium and octatensin can be
explained by their

ABSTRACT: The GK-7 hodoscopic system has been investigated ex

limit the application of this system in -the region of
small pulses (less than 10 v) from Geiger-Muller counters,
The effect of thq magnetic J ''ield on the working of GK-7

TITLE: Measurement of charged-particle masses with the aid
of scintillation counters
PERIODICAL: Pribory i tekh-nika eksperimenta, no.6, 1961, 52-56
TEXTa The method can be used to (it) select particles which
stop in*the scintillator owing to ionization losses, and
(b) to determine the mass of the particles by measuring their
energy and range in the scintillator. The device consists of a
telescope of n scintillation counters (C19 ..... 1 Cn) with
thickness tl- .... f n re s pe ctIve 1y. If a particle which has
passed at an angle of y through k - 1 scintillators has come
to rest in the scintillator Ck at a depth Ex, and at the end
of its range in the m + 1. scintillators Ck-ml-----,Ck the
energy losses &Ek-m ..... AEk were due to ionization only, then
it can be shown that:

(i OV-00 M - 2)
This holds whatever the nature of the particle, the direction-of
its motion, and range in the last scintillator Ck- Thus, by
measuring the energies Ngn in the scintillators
Clg----v Cn one can select with the aid of Eq,(l) all those
particles which come to rest in the scintillators Ck-m ...... Ck
by losing energy in ionization processeti only.
For stable particles &91 = 6Ei~ If on the other hand a
primary particle decays (or is captured) in the scintillator Ck
then the energy liberated in Ck is Mk = &Ek + 6Ek where
the latter quantity is the energy of thl~ secondary particles.
In this caso the first equation (i = 0) in Eq,(l) can only be
used for the determination.of the unknown energy;
&Ek = Atk-l fo (,N6 k-1/ t"k-2) (4)

and the remaining relations in Eq.(l) are used to select the
ionization stoppages. The energy loss of a particle with an
ionizing power I/Imin in the scintillator C, is given by:
A E i = B (I/M min )Ci ti MeV (5)
where B is in MeV/cm and represents the minimum ionization loss
in the particular scintillator, and 4i is the thickness of the
scintillator Ci in cm. Thus the energy lost by it particle

can also be determined from a relation of the form:

In order to verify the above method the authors have used the
results obtained with the instrument described by A.I. Alikhanov,
A.V. Khrimyan, V.K. Kosmachevskiyj V.V. Avakyan, Yu.V. Gorodkov,
K.Sh. Yegiyan and N.A. Nalbandyan. (R(!f,6: Proceedings of the

The instrument consists of a magnetic mass spectrometer, a
five-
layer proportional counter (A.I. Alikhanov, V.A. Lubimov,
G.P. Elisiyev, CERN Symposium, V.2, 1956, 87) and five
scintillation counters (V.K. Kosmachevskiy and M.S.
Aynuddinov,
PrE, no-3, 1956, 49). The rms error in the momenta
between 0.2
and 1 GeV/c was approximately 8 to 5% for protons
and 2 to 4%
for TC-mesons. The ionizing power of the pa,~ticles
could be
measured with the proportional counter to an average
accuracy of
14%. For particles stopping in the scintillation
counters the
average losses in the scintillators could be
measured to 10%.
Preliminary results indicate that the
efficiency of selection of
particles which come to rest owing
to ionization only is about
o.8. The average accuracy with
which the masses can be determined
from the energies and ranges
is approximately 20%. The
statistics on which these results are
based are limited and
therefore the results are only
preliminary. The experiment did
not confirm the possibility of
investigating the masses and
decays of unstable particles. The
method may find wide-ranging
applications and is amenable to
automation. Acknowledgments are

TITLE: Composition of nuclear-active cosmic-ray particles with

PERIODICAL: Zhurnal eksperimentallnoy i teoreticheskoy

TEXT: The nature and momentum spectra of nuclear-active
cosmic-ray
particles in the momentum range above 1.8 B,?v/c were studied
on Mount
Aragats (Armenia) at an altitude of 3250 m above sea level in
order to
determine the relative rumber of pions in the particle flux.
The investi-
gations were made with a magnetic mass spectrometer of 68,50
oe including
a hodoscope, a thin-walled five-layer propoxtional counter,
and five
scintillation counters. The momenta from 2 to 20 Bev/0 were
determined
with a mear, square error from 10 to 805A. The ionizing power
of individual
particles was determined with a mean error .)f t 14~ (gas
~-.ounter) and

t 10-p (scintillation counters). Electrons, muons, and the
particles pro-
duced in the device were not taken into account. Two series of
measure-
zents were carried out: (1) coincidences I + II t III + IV + V
- XIII and
recording of particles absorbed by the filters together with
their
secondary products; (2) coincidences I + II + III + IV + V and
recording
of all the-particles. The results of both series could be used
to deter-
mine the relative number of pions in the cosmic-ray particle
flux.
Results: In the momentum range of 1.8 - 22 Bev/a, which
contains 95 - 98%
of the particles with momenta :~~!1.8 Bev/c, negative particles
comprise
about 3~'o of all the particles. In the momentum range of 100 -
720 Mev/c,
the ratio N +IN 0-90 1 0-15 was obtaineft for the
nuclear-active cosmic-
71 7E
ray particle flux. In the momentum range or 1.8 - 22 Bev/c,
pions account
for 6 t 2~o of all the nuclear-active particles. On the
assumption that
also the five particles with unknown sign, observed above 1.8
Bev/cj are
pions, the latter comprise not more than 10,4 of the
nuclear-active cosmic-
ray particles at 325C m above sea level. The results are
consistent with
published data (Ref. 11: N. M. Kocharyan, G. S. Saakyan, Z. A.

protons, and
deuterons requires other methods. In the rttnge;~~2 Bev/c, these
particles
cannot be determined by measuring the ionization and momentum,
or by the
method applied here. Professor A. I. Alikhanyan is thanked for
