tions by dark-red lamps from 20 December to 10 May iu the
Pervomyskiy Sovkhoz, Moscow Oblast'. Sixty cows wcro
iajected with an oily solution of vitamin D. Two g=ps
of irradiated and 2 eroups of not-irradiated cows (5 cows
in each group) were examineCL nore thorou&hly. The ist

was also irradiated for 16 hours per day, and received
injectious of a vitamin D concentrate as well (75 thousand
m units per day). The 3rd group was injected with the vi-
tamin D concentrate only (150 thousand m units par day),
and, finally, the 4th Group was given 75 thousand u units
of vitamin D daily. The Goneral. organic wellbeing improved
in irradiatod cows* In thu lot and 2nd groups the nuJ=
of cows with abnormal motions decreased, shedding beLpli. a
month earlier., and the incidence of complications after
calvinG decreased also* Blood serum contained rmre nor.-
orGanic phosphorus and calcium. The number of cases with
low blood acidity becam larger within the Ist and Zud
groups. A'Llbumin fractions of protein became lar,-cr ia the
blood serum of lot grpup cows. The live wei(~ht of calves
in the 1st group was larj~cr than in the other p7oups.

PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1959, Vol 124, Nr 4. PP 855-657

ABSTRACT: The present paper investigates the passivation of silver in
solutions of KOH in the concentration interval of from
0.01 n to 10 n according to the method of measuring the
capacity and the ohmic components of the impedance of the
electrode at constant current density or constant potentit--.
Impedance was measured by employing the compensation method,
If a low positive potential (0.3 v against the oxide.-nEmury
electrode in the same solution) is applied, the dissolution
rate of the silver decreasea rapidly, and, at the same time,
also the capacity of the double layer of the electrode is
reduced. These considerable modifications of the intensity
kof the dissolving current and of the electrode capacity
occur during the pasagge of a smaller quantity of electricity
(- 20 millicoulomb cm ), which corresponds on the average

The Anodic Passivation of Silver in ScIutianr~
Is apparently connected with the aeraicoiOuctor properties
of the Ar, 0. Here it is assumed that the Ag O-layer formed

covers the electrode in a relatively uniform manner. The
data discussed indicate the following: At the very beginning,
before a compact Ag 20--layer is formed on the surface, a solu-
tion with primary formation of an oversaturated solution and
with a following deposition at the centers of crystallization
is formed. After the formation of a compact Ag 2O-layer on
the surface of the silver, the Ag 0 Ag 0 process apparently
develops on the boundary between two soKd phases. During
the formation of the compact Ag,O-layer the rate at which the
process Ag -D,-Ag20 develops decreases considerably. This is
described by the authors as the first stage of passivation.
However, the process develops only during a limited period
at this reduced rate. In the case of constant amperage the
potential increases considerably after a certain interval of
tire, and the second stage of passivation begins. At the same
time, slowing down of the electrochemical process Ag -0, Ag 0
as a whole increases rapidly. At this stage this is probabiy

the silver, similar as is the cane in the solution and passiva-
tion of iron in a lye. These as well as other results discussed
here lead to the following conclusion: The anodic passivation
of silver in lye takes place in three successive stages,
and in each of these stages the rate of oxidation decreases
rapidly. The investigation of the mechanism of these stages of
passivation is being continued. There are 2 fipuresand 5 ref-
erences, 4 of which are Soviet.

TEXT: A previous paper by the authors (DAN v. 124, no. 4, 1955, 655)
showed that the anode current in anodic oxidation of silver in alkali at
constant potential (0-32 v) decreased in the first minutes after switching
on, remained constant for some time, and subsequently continued decreasing.
The reasons for this course of the current-time curve are studied in this
paper. The overvoltage curve of the Ag -4 A process shows a sharp

increase of the overvoltago potential at approximately 1.104 a?oa
indicating that a diffusion limiting current has been reached. Both the
limiting current and its independence of the KOH concentration exclude a

Mechanism of anodic oxidation ... B145/BIOI
The active impedance component, Rol of the Ag electrode increases
indefini%ly with I/Tc-a- The resistance equivalent to the concentration
polarization is approximately 100 times higher than in the concentration
polarization of the diffusing ion in solution. Ro does not depend on the
KOH concentration. It may be concluded from those results that diffusion
in complicated in the oxide layor. Ag ions diffuse through the A920 layer,
and the Ag --+ A920 process takes place on the boundary layer between
solution and A92 0. This process limited by diffusion does not continue
it the @am* rate until the Ag electrode is completely consumed but
passivation occurs, as in shown by the decrease in the anode current.
This may also be observed in a shift of the overvoltage curve toward lower
log i values for this period. The measurement of the active component of
impedance shows that there exists no concentration polarization for this
period. The following is suggested to explain passivation: Accumulation
of adsorbei oxygen on the oxide surface layer effects both a decrease of
the adsorption rat* of oxygen and of the ionization rate of Ag atoms.
The resistance of the electrochemical proo#se calculated from the inolina-
tion of the overvoltage'ourve (if - log i) and the value i increases

Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian summary] The diagnostic problems of retrac-
tion nystagmus are discussed on the basis of 6 cases observed. It was
demonstrated by electromyography that the essence of the disturbance in
ocular motion is the synchronous contraction of antagonistic eye muscles.
