ABSTRACT: When the above compound was subjected to thermal
dehydration in a neutral medium the basic product was
found to be a5l20(22)23~_30-aretoxy-24,24-diphenylehola-
triene. It isthus possible to synthesise progesterone by
using the lactone of,65-30,20dioxycholenic acid. This
lactone is separated from the oxidation products of
cholesterylacetate dibromide (Ref. 1). Billeter and
Kiescher (Ref. 2) showed that it was possible to use this
compound which they converted from the lactone (I) by the
Grignard reaction into

heating the latter with acetic acid they formed the

formed fz~om the last produi~t_ These
authors did not give any yields of cholatriene (IV).
Kiprianov and Veytsman checked the above mentioned, method
but could not obtain yields exceeding 11% of IV. The autho:
carried out the dehydration not in an acid medium but in a
neutral medium by heating the 3P-acetate of the triol (II)
in a vacuum at high temperatures. Under these conditions
the yield of cholatriene (IV) was increased to 75% and only
?c,~ of the epoxide (VI) was formed. The freshly preparod
3P-acetate of the triol (11) does not chanFe to any ettent
during heating but dehydrogenates easily after prolonged
exposure to air. Probable reasons for this phenomenon are
put forward. The authors could also separate a small quan-
tity(l.?%) of the compound III apart from IV and VI (from
the dehytration products of II.) The structure of III
was verified. Billeter and Miescher identified this as
the choladiene (III) but the authors proved that it was
the epoxide (VI) (Ref. 5). The compound III was shown
to be unstable when heated with acetic acid and easily
transformed into compound VI. It can therefore be assumed
that the initial dehydration product is choladiene
(III-) which isomerises in

ABSTRACT:

Strip lines are finding numerous applications in miniature
transmission elements at ultra-high frequencies. In most
cases,'the lines have a complex (compound) dielectric in
t1ioir transvorse cross-section. However, only the case of
the lines with a homogeneous dielectric has been inves'-i-
gated (Refs 1,2). The paper deals, therefore -, with a
strip line furnished with a compound dielectric. Since the
characteristics of a single-conductor placed above a
conducting earth and those of a coaxial line are very
similar, the former can be represented by the latter. For
a coaxial line of the type shown in Figure la, the
equivalent dielectric constant can be expressed by Eq (3),
while for the line of Figure I b , the equivalent permittivity
is given by Eq (4); these equations were derived in
Refs 3 and 5. Eq (4) was verified experimentally and the

results are shown in Figure 2. A number of single-
conductor lines situated above the conducting earth are
shown in Figure 3; the coaxial-line equivalents to these
systems arc also given in Figure 3. The equivalent permitt-
ivities of the lines are considered and the method of
calculating them is indicated. An asymmetrical strip
line with a corpound dielectric is shown ih Figure 4a,
while Figure 4b shows its conformal transformation. The
equivalent permittivty of the system is expressed by
Eq (Ila). When the boundary between two dielectrics has
the shape of an equipotential line, such as shown in
Figure 4B, the equivalent permittivity can also be evaluated
from Eq Ila. This does not take into account the thickness
of the strip. It is shown that if a strip thickness is
6 , the equivalent permittivity of the system can be
represented by Eq (11b). Eqs (11) should be regarded as
approximate, since the conformal transformation is
Card2/3 approximate. However, it is possible to introduce a

permittivity is expressed by Eq (11B). Four different
strip lines, shown in Figure 6, are also considered. The
c-.~'ziivalent permittivity for the line of Figure 6a is given
by Eq (20), while that for Figure 6b is given by Eq (21).
Similarly, the permittivities for the lines of Figures 6v
and 6g are given by Eqs (22) and (23). The narrow-strip
etrlcal line with a compound delectrln is also
investigated (Figure 7). It is shown that the equivalent
permittivity of this system is given by Eq (26). The

ABSTRACT: An investigation was made of the results of experiments carried out
in 1959 in the central part of the Syr-Darlya depression to develop a method of
suppressing multiple reflected waves and to detect single reflected waves from
abyssal horizons. Large charges were used for the tests, Single 40-kg charges
placed in 25-35-m-deep boreholes and grouped charges totalling 45 kg placed in
I boreholes 7-15 m deep were used to cause the generation. The recording was
accomplished with individual seismic receivers with a low-pass 60 filter, and

with high-pass 45, 75, and oo filters (the last two were found to be the best).
Deep-seated single reflections appeared with an increase in the charge, but they
were recorded simultaneously with multiple- reflection waves. Excitation and
recording tests of low-frequency vibrations were made. A low-pass 45 filter was
used. Waves were generated on the surface and In small boreholes (up to 5 m) with
small 0. 4-20-kg charges. The flat-front method was tried. A simultaneous
explosion of 7 charges in boreholes 8-15 m deep was made with the method select-
ed on a base of 600 m, the distance between the boreholes being 100 m. The
magnitude of single 5. 2-kg charges, and that of the total charge was 36. 4 kg.
Recording was made by a single SMP-16A and a uniform linear, regular array of
seismic receivers. The distance between the instruments in the group was 10 m,
and that between group centers was 40 m. The low-pass 60 filter and the high-pass
25 filter produced the best filtration. The analysis of results obtained showed that
flat - front-m ethod seismograms contain deep-seated single reflections were
together with multiple-reflection waves, which is clearly evident from the presence
of waves with different apparent velocities. T. Polyakova. [Translation of

Depth-sounding data are compared with seismic data on the distribution
of earthquake sites and with the character of the gravitational field. It
,is shown that, assuming certa-In relationships between the gravitational
.field and the composition of the eartn's crust, it is possible to separate
that portion of gravitational anomalies which depends on the masses which
;make up the earth's crust and the top part of the subsurface layer. An
-.example is given of the complexinterpretation of the results of depth-
sounding and gravimetry. M

ABPTRACTs The common or gray guinea fowls (Fumida meleagris L.) are rela-
ted to the domestic fowls. They have in contrast to then lost
much less of their wild qualities. The domestic guinea -~'owls
maintained their capacity of quick running, less that of flying.
It was observed that they could fly more than 2oo m in a height
of 5-10 m- It was interesting to find out whether tLese running
and flying capacities had exercised and influence on the struc-
ture of the pectoral (m.pectoralis) and leg muacieL- (m. tibialis
antious) if they are compared to the domestic fowls. For the in-
vestigation 2 years old guinea fowls were used and Leghorn fowls
of.the same age. For their age they had an average living weight
and mast state and their living conditions were the same.It was
found that the guinea fowls had considerably greater pectoral
muscles. Also measurements were carried out at the elementary
muscle fibres. The measurements are given in table 2 and figure
Card 1/2 1. The observations showed that the weight of the pectoral mus-

cles of the guinea fowls was greater by 23% and the relative and
absolute thickness of the elementary muscle fibres (pectoral
muscles by 31% and leg muscles by 3,7%) is greater than that of
the Leghorn fowls. Also the fluctuation limits of the thickness
of the muscle fibres are considerablj greater in the case of
guinea fnwls. These differences become most obvious in the peo-
toral muscles, a fact by which probably the maintained flying
napacity is to be explained. There are 1 figure, 2 tables, and 6
references, 3 of which are Slavic.

TITLE: Investigation of load characteristics of silicon power diodes

TOPIC TAGS: silicon diode, electronic rectifier/VK-200 silicon diode, PVK-200
silicon diode
ABSTRACT: Data are presented from an investigation of the overload characteristics
of silicon power diodes VK-200, VKD-200 and PVK-200, and their parameters are
compared. Practical recommendations are given for reduction of the number of
semiconductor diodes in rectifiers of electric trains. In the diodes tested,
increasing short circuit current caused a non-linear increase in p-n junction tempera-
t! e depending on the preliminary heating of the junction. The body temperatures
14r
of the three types of diodes tested under the same operating conditions differed
very little. The internal thermal resistance of the PVK-200 was found to be about
1.5 times that of the other two types. It was decided that protection of the
rectifier of the ER-9 electric locomotive Ciould be simplified, since the requirements
for overload capacity of silicon diodes is satisfied in conjunction with a high-
voltage air-gap circuit breaker plus current-limiting reactor. Orig. art. has:

air were coated with t22xX!1Lacquer,/,-5o_r synthetic rubber, or anodized in sulfuric

tested was 11.0-11.5 dan/mm2 regardless of the environment (air or vacuum) or surfac
condition (see Flit, 1). However, specimens coated with synthetic rubber exhibited a
considerably longer fatigue life thar the uncoated specimens. At stresses approachin
the fatigue limit, the life of the rGbber-egated specimens was 10 times longer than
