ABSTRACT: This Author's Certificate introduces an output system for a scintillation
'hodoscope~ The device contains shift registers and counters. The time for tape re-
cording or punching the output information is reduced by using binary code for re-
.cording information on the number of the counter. The device contains a source of
zhift pulses and two coincidence circuits. The inputs of the first coincidence cir~
~cult are connected to the first digit in the shift register and to a source of ca-
dence pulses. The output from this circuit is connected through a blocking gt~nera-
.tor and a switch to the output system which records the state'of the counter on

punched tape. The inputs to the second coincidence circuit are connected to a
source of cadence pulses and to a phase inverter. The phase inverter is connected
~to the first digit of the shift register. The output from the second coincidence
circuit is connected to an mplifier which is connected in turn to the inputs of the
,shift register and the counter.

ABSTRACT: A method of checking the data recorded on punchtape is described which
compares check totals. The check total to obtained from an adder to which data is fed
from a recording system. In tape recording, the incoming-signal codes are converted
into mechanical motions and perforation characters which also are counted. Tallying
the total on the tape with the check total testifies to the correctness of data read-
out and recording. The check system comprises a tape punching device, a readout devic4
and a check adder. With a 6-track recording and a perforation rate.of 20 lines per
second, 200 16-digit numbers or 100 48-digit numbers can be processed in one
minute. The adder is of the and-around-carry design. The adder input is connected to
the multichannel-analyzer output. The interrogation time of 1000 channels is one sec-
ond. The total readout time of 1000 channels 1B 6 minutes. The above efficient
method was developed in the Laboratory of Neutron Physics, Joint Institute of
Nuclear Studies. Two figures. Bibliography of 2 titles. V, L. [Translation of abstractj-

TITLE: Effect of gas-shielded are cuttin, on the properties of Kh18NIOT jiteel

ABSTRACT: Hot-rolled Khl8NIOT stainless steel plates (0.11% C, 17.6% Cr, 10.7% Ki,
0.75% Ti] -were cut by a gas-shielded electric are in order to investigate the effect
of cutting conditions on the structure, corrosion, and weldability. The gas-electric
cutting was done under mild conditions (current I = 330-360 amp, arc voltage
U = 44 v, cutting speed Vc = 270 mm/min, nitrogen consumption Qg2 = 1600 1/hr, cut
width dc = 6 mm) and under severe conditions (I = 400 amp% Ua =5 v, Vc = 1140 mmifnin
QN2 = 5000 1/hr,' QH2 =, 16oo 1/hr, d. = 4 mm). Regerdless of the regime of cutting,!
the surface of the cut had a thin Fe304 film which, under optimum cutting conditions,
was about 0.6 um thick. Changes in the structure of the metal cut under mild and

severe conditions extended to a depth of 1.5 and 0.2 mm, respectively. The condition4
of cutting had little effect on the rate of general corrosion of the as-cut surface,
which was only slightly higher than the rate of 1.5 j/M2.hr for mechanically cut
specimens. After a sensitizingheat treatment, the/rate of general corrosion of me-
chanically cut 'specimens increased by 2-6 times, d that of the arc-cut specimens,
by 8-10 times. The corrosion rate of the surfacO of the cut prior to sensitizing
was 2-3 times higher, and after sensitizing, 10-13 times h1gher tsn tnt cf the base metal,
This increase, however, is not dangerous since it does not extend beyond a small
fusion zone. Hence, gas-shielded arc cutting of Khl8NlOT steel should be done pre-
ferably under severe conditions, which ensure a narrow fusion zone. No cut specimens,
regardless of the method and conditions of cutting, exhibited intergranular cor-
rosion. Sound welds were obtained by submerged-arc welding of cut specimens without
additional preparation, and no difference was observed in the structure of the metal
of the weld and heat-affected zone in specimens cut by different methods. Orig.- art.

TITLE: Investigating corrosion of titanium and its alloys in solutions of

TE(Tz The authors studied corrosion behAvior of Ti and its alloys in
bromine solutions in methyl alcohol (I). Corrosion of all the alloys increased
with a higher Br concentration in the solution. Alloys with an 06-structure
(VT1 and VT5) were less stable than alloys with an 06+ ~ -structure (VT-~-3 and
VT3-1). Ti iodide was more stable than technically pure Ti, Addition of water
to I, containing bromine, caused a decrease of the Ti corrosion rate; thii:is'--
explained by the direct interaction of water with the Ti surface and the f6rffia-
tion of a protective oxide film. Besides general corrosion, T1 In Br soluttons
in (1) is affected by interarystalline corrosion. Proneness of T1 to Inter-
crystalline corrosion increases with a Br-concentration In I reduced from 5 to

1%. When water (up to 5% concentration) was added into I cbntaining 2% Br,
the proneness of Ti to intercrystalline corrosion first increased sharply; a
further increase of water concentration caused reduced proneness of Ti to
intercryAtalline corrosion. At 30% and more water content, intercrystalline
and general corrosion of Ti are stopped. Ti corrosion in Br solutions in I is
of an electrochemical nature. Br ionization is a cathode process, and Ti
dissolving is an anode process. Contrary to acid aqueous media, where anode
polarization is an effective means of Ti protection, Ti should be protected
against corrosiun in dehydrated solutions of Br in I with the aid of cathode
polarization. In a 2% Br-solution, full Ti protection is assured by maintaining
the potential near - 0.350 v. There are 10 references.

TEXT: An investigation of the corrosion resistance of Ti and Ti alloys in
solutions of Br in CH 3OH has shown that alloys with an a-structure, Byl
(M) and 1~T5 (VT5), are less resistant than those with an a + p structure,
BT3 (VT3) and BT3-1 (VT3-1)- It is noted that in all the Ti alloys the
rate of corrosion increased with the Br 2 concentration of the solution,
and that Ti iodide is more stable than technically pure Ti. An addition
of water to the Cif3OH + Br2 was found to reduce the rate of corrosion, due
to the formation of a protective oxide film. Ti is also subject to

concentration in CH 30H from 5 to 1 '!- If the water content of the
solution is more than 30 'P', however, both intercryotalline and general
surface corrosion cease. The corrosion of Ti in Br 2 + CH3011 solutions
is found to be of an electrochemical nature. In anhydrous solutions Ti
can be protected by cathode polarization. For total protection in a Z-;
solution of Br 2 the potential must be maintained at around -0.,350 v-
