TITLE- A Broadband Waveguide Directional Coupi
PERIODICAL: Radiotekhni'ca, !960, Vol. 5., No. 4, pp~ 8 - 17
TEXT; In the article under review, the authors study the demands made on a
directional coupler which warrants the necessary accu:!-acy for mea4uring the re-
flection coefficient when incident waves and reflected waves are indicated sepa-
rately. A method of calculation is suggested, and 1~xpi:-rimental results are given.
First, the demands made on the parameters cf the dire(:;tlonal coupler are studied.
The approximate formula (4) for the load reflection coefficient is developed, and
formula (5) is given for the weakening of the directional coupler, and formula (6)
is written down for the directivity of the coupler. In the followinp, the authors
disruBs the sources of error in measuring the load reflection coefficient:
1) errors which are due to reflection produced by the load of the auxiliary line;
2) errors due to the finite directivity of the dilectional coupler; 3) errors due
to the unequal character of measurement of the transient weakening In the wave
range. In the following, the directional coupler 113 regarded as being composed of

two parallel rectangular waveguides. The coupling between these "waveguides" is
brought about by two spaced slits which are arranged I.n T-shape (Fig. 3). The
calculation of T-shaped alit coupling elements is dis~,ussed in detail, in which
connection formulas (15) are developed for the two tr;tnsmission ccefficients. The
transient weakening of these coupling elements is cal:.-ulated from (19), while
formula (20) in given for the directivity of the coupler, Next, thi.~ authors give
a detailed description of a system consisting of N equal coupling elements which
are arranged along the waveguide, It is noted that calculation of the transient
weakening in second approximation from formula (29) 1!1 sufficient for practical
purposes, Formula (30) is used to calculate the direc,:ivity of a multielement
directional coupler, and formula (31) in given for the 3paCing Uf the co-apling
elements- Within a certain range it is thus possible -~o obtain perfect directi-
vity at some points., Some points depend on the choice of coupling elements, and
others on their spacing, The transient weakening and 1-,be directivity of the
directional coupler were measured by the standard method of substitution. The
power at an indicator was kept on the same level by moans of a hi~:h-precision
attenuator. The directivity of the coupler could be measured without using a
special method, B. F, Y,3melin and thL, mathematician P, L. Cheby8hov are
mentioned in this article. There are 8 figures and 5 3oviet references, Vr

An article titled "Effects ct Asphyxia and blood Letting rn Reflexes

,rad Medical Instltutt~ bleni I. P. D:.vlov, shows that the cen-

ters of the spinal cord po3sees varying resisLaaceg to anemia., and that
the methods of occlusion or insufficient blood 3upply of the spinal cord
and of asphyxia lead to similar changes of spir,al reflex actIvity.
The author points out that 25 tests were on spinal :.rogs, rab-
bits, and cats after the severance of the spinAl cord at the level be-
tveen T and LI and also belov the medulla obloni-

The author concludes that (a) asphyxia or apemia is a -.)owerful stim-
ulant of the nervous system; (b) a temporary -::essation of respiration
(asph,,-Aia) maj be used successfully as a method of anemic injury of the
spinal cord; (c) change of the excitability er the spinal cord after ane-

Theoretical considerations an the meamurement of GFR with various test
substances are presented. Measurements with No. thiofiulphate gave a value of
90.7 ml./min. in the dog. It is concluded that the thlosulphate elimination gives
information ars to the activity of the glomerull and to a certain extent permits de-
terminction ol their efficiency. Advantages of the method aTe its simplicity and

carbonate was used as the anceptor of the hydrogen chlorldo formod during the
hydrolysis process. 1.4-dioxane was used an the solvent for roduoinG the hydroly-

amount of undoomposed megneeiun carbonate. Under the given conditions, the
reaction rato was sufficiently low, so that Ita progres(i could be observed. After

sulfates of sodiun. potasaiun, copper, zinc and nickel on the hydrolysis reaction
rate of diethyl dichlorosilano and condensation of its products was also investi-
gated. With the exception of the nitrates and chlorides of sodium and potassium,
all of those salts bring about a reduction in the hydrol.,)sis ronotion rate. At a
ratio of ion moles or water to a mole of diethyl diohloroollano with 2n sGlt solu-
tions, the degree of hydrolysis of the Si-Cl bonds after 30 minutes at 20 C and in
the presence of nitrates and chlorides of sodium and potc, saim is 49.9 to 52o1%.
It is 34.1 to 36.00,, in the presence of copper and zinc, i!Lnd 11.6 to 12.8% in the
presence of the sulfates or oopper, zinc and nickel* Tho influence of temperature
upon the hydrolysis reaction rate was also investigated. A temperature increase or
5 C brings &bout an inoroaaa in the degree of hydrolysis from 2.1 to 2#7g. It was
noted that a very small reduction In the hydrolysis rate is caused by those salts
which have water particles in the (CuSO * 6H20, ZnS04 a 7H20, NiSO4 * 7H20) &niOn
whilo in colid solutions The condensatton rate of the h:rdrolyeia products in the
presence of salt is very small. The degree of oondensation after 24 hours under
identical oonditions does not oxo9ed 3.1%. Orig. art. hisms 7 figures and 4 tables.
