TRANSLATION- The authors present the results of engine performance tests on Volga
automobiles, carried out to verify the effect of engine oil changes on oil consumption and
on the technical condition of an engine. The oil in one group of engines was replaced after
every 2000 km, while the other group operated without oil ctmnges Oil filter ofarnents
were replaced every 2000 km in both groups. Oil S11 (GOST 1707-51) was used throughout.
Engines operating wit-hout oil changes showed lower oil (onsumption and lesser wear in

TITLEt A method for measuring ga n of circularly polarized antennas
SOURCE: RadiotekhnLka L elektronika, v. 11, no. 10, 1966, 1870-1872
TOPIC TAGSt circularly polarized antenna, antenna gain
ABSTRACT: A mirror-image method for measuring the gain of circularly
polarized antennas is described. Gain is measured by placing the
antenna. which has a phasing network in its waveguide run, at a
distance R/2 from an ideally conducting plane. The distance R between
the antenna aperture and its mirror image satisfies the conditions of
a field at great distance. The reflected wave (with a reversed screw
sense with respect to that of the incident) is received by the antenna,
goes through the phaser and emerges as a plane-polarized wave at the
feeder output. Since its polarization is orthogonal tr that of the
feeder, the wave in reflected from the feeder output and re-radiated
by the antenna. The re-radiated wave has a reversed screw sense from
that of the original wave. This re-radiated wave is reflected again

and then received by the antenna with a plane of polarization such that
it can be admitted by the feeder, which convert# it to an elliptically
polarized wave. Antenna gain ia calculated from axial ratio measure-
ments made at the peak of the major lobe. Gain.measurements were made
with square, rectangular. and conical apertures fed by a circular wave-
guide. Error did not exceed 10% for axial ration not smaller than
0.95 (axial ratios measured without the reflecting screen). Orig. art.

TEXTi Single crystals of 99.9950' aluminium -viere prepared by
selective recrystallization. The gauge length of the ispecimen
was 25 nim and its diameter 6 nun. With a stress of 1164 S/mm?- at
20 OC, a sample in which a large number of slip systems could
operate deformed much less than a sample in which the probability
of slip was extremely small except in the main system. After ten
hours the crystals deformed to 3.2 and 22.51*0 respectively.
At 300 OC, with a stress of 124 g/mm2, the behaviour was reversed:
The results confirmed that a large number of slip systems results
in strengthening at low temperatures and an increase in
deformation at higher temperatures. It had been shown (Ref.6z
D. MacLean, Graia Boundaries in Metals (Granitsy zeren v
metallakh), Metallurgizdat, !96o) that slip in grain boundary

regions of polycrystalline samples was complex. In these regions,
in the case of a face-centred cubic lattice, up to five families
of slip can operate. Thuso.at low temperatures, this would
result in strengthening, and at higher temperatures in an increase
in deformation. In this way, the effect of grain size on creep
resistance could be explained without the idea of the "viscous
1 -3 behaviour', of the boundary.

ABSTRACT: Of late a series of investigations of coal structure were per-
formed, utilizing the magnitude of the heat of combustion.
In some papers (Ref 1) the intermolecular interaction was
neglected, and therefore the authors did not succeed in ob-
taining new results on the structure of coal substance from
calorimetric data. It is obvious that in the aeries of the
thermal destruction of coal that variety with a maximum ab-
solute value and a negative sign should correspond to the
structure of graphite, which consists entirely of rings. The
authors introduced the conception of the "structure index"

combustion of the product to be investigated and of graphiteg
respeotivelys Fig 1 shows the values of the index for all
investigated products of the thermal destruction of mineral
coal with respect to the temperature at which they were ob!
tained. The variation of the value of the structure index
is divided into 40 ranges in a distinctly marked manner:
1) From 25 to 435 . The index increases inconsiderably, from
o,25 to o,3. Great amounts of gases escape, which on the
whole are no products of decomposition. They are occluded
gasesv steam and the most volatile substances. The macro-
structure is irreversibly destroyed because of the 0 increase
of the energy of the molecules. 2) From 435 to 54o ' C in-
x
creases rapidly, from 0,3 to o,6 - o18. Only small amounts
of gases evolve as compared to the next range. The energy
of the molecules increases to such an extent that the majori-
ty of them passes into the liquid phase, and the larger amogg
them decompose and form liquid products- 3) From 500 to 700 -
Card 2/4 C decreases rapidly; from o,6 - o,8 to 0,42. The gas forma-

tion is considerable. All compounds, whioh are not in a po--
sitionto take up an energetically favorable ring structure,
on the whole pass into the gaseous phase. 4) From 700 0 to
graphitization. The gas formation is weakened or ceases
completely., the process lasting until to the formation of
graphite crystals. On the basis of the measurement of the
heats of combustion of coal and of its solid products of
thermal destruction the authors proved that a high degree
of strueture regulation is observed in the Sourse of this
destruction in the temperature range of 540 . The modifi.-
cations of the coal substance proceeding in this range
without doubt determine the structure (and with it the
technological properties) of high-temperature coke. There

]PERIODICAL: lzmeritellnaya Tokhnika, 1959, Nr 5, p 9 (USSR)
ABSTRACT- The proposed method makes it possible to test micrometers of a
great measuring range (more than 100 mm) with the help of stop
measures whose block has a extension of 25 mm. The illustration
shows a special clamping device. The first thing to be controlled
is the zero point. The rest of the controlling process is the same
Card 1/1 as with small micrometers. There are 2 diagrams. KhGIMIP and
KhTZ are using the device.

ABSTRACT: This article gives a description of the design and certain operational characteris-
tics of a new sensor for mcasuring wave velocities. it consists of a housing (working part),
coupling, end cap, cover, arin, and a disk. The housing is mado of a brass cylinder whose
outside diameter and wall th1c](ness are sclected for convenlence of mounting the strain gages
and Its sensing clenient. 1!',xper' mental models of the skraln- page nornnor of wave velocities
were tested In the Iaboratory and under full-scale conditions on a calibration stand. The pur
pose of the tests was to check the ar-tightness of the Instrument and to determine its technical
