Abstract; (English article] Rhodotorula and Cryptococcus were the most com-
monly encountered yeast species in the pollution of air over Budapest. No
seasonal difference was observed in the incidence of the 100 Rhodotorula
strains isolated, representing 12 species. Of the isolated strains, 34% be-
longed to Rhodotorula glutinis, 26% to Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, 16% to
Rhodotorula rubra and 11% to Rhodotorula minuta. The incidence data and
some morphological information was presented in tabular form. 24 refe-

Abstract: (English article; authors' English su,wmry, madified]By use of
the replica plating technique the asFimilatiou and utilization as carbon
and nitrogen sources of 10 organic acids and 11 aminoacids were examined.
The results obtained with one strain of each of 25 different yeast spe-
cies were evaluated in view of taxonomical and physiological significance.
The replica plating technique, owing to the low nitrogen requirement of
the majority of the species examined, was found unsuitable for nitrogen-
source determination. 24 references, including 5 German, I Russian, 6

ABSTRACT: The mass production control of very thick products requires the development of
new, more efficient devices for the realization of satistaAory quality control. The present
paper describes a BD-1 automated betatron flaw detectorl * universal mobile device based on
the B-25/10 betatFo-naElj: presents a detailed outline of its automatic cofitrol. The device can
carry out continuous plant control of steel products 50-500 mm, thick and 0. 5 to 8 m long. The

test piece may have a complex configuration with a maximum drop In thickness along the
irradiation direction of up to 100 mm. Experiments carried out at 25 MeV (radiation intensity
40-60 Roentgen/min) show that flaw detection Is no worse than 0. 3-1% of the ma)dmum, thick-
ness of the sample. The productivity Is at least 2 m2/hour, the device requires a three-phase

production control, outlines the automatic control system, and the X-ray photography system.

TITLE: Method of preparing 2-isopropylanthraquinone
PERIODICAL: Zhurnal prikladnoy khimii, v, 33, nov 8, 1960,
1893 - 1896
TEXT: Recently alkylanthraquinones have been applied as hydrogen
carriers in producing hydrogen peroxide, It hasp therefore, been
necessary to look for new methods of preparing these compounds on
an industrial scale. The specific reaction with which the authors
were concerned was to prepare 2-iaopropylanthraquinozie in two sta-
ges, instead of four as in Scholl's methodt which involved react-
ing isopropylbenzene with phthalic anhydride and reducing the re-
sulting 4-isopropylbenzoyl-2-benzoic acid to 4-isopropanyl-benzyl-
2-benzoic acid followed by cyclization of the latter in the presen-
ce of sulphuric acid. To avoid the formation of sulphonic acid

derivatives and to increase the yields of the required quinone the
authors investigated the influence of the oleum concentration, tem-
perature and period of heating. In the case of 3 % oleum and heat-
ing for 1 - 3 hours sulphonatlon occurred. When the concentration
was increased to 8,% the yield of quinone was 15 %j however, this
yield decreased when 12 - 20 % oleum. was used. The effect of heat-
ing with 8 % oleum is shown, and it is clear that the time of re;d
action determines the yield of quinone. Beat resulta were obtain
with reaction times of 2.5 3 hours, and under optimum conditions
the yield reached 55 - 60 In the earlier investigations the
first stage, condensation of phthalic anhydride with isopropylben-
zene, was conducted in a carbon disulphide medium, The authors,
however, used chlorobenzene as a less hazardous solvent and achie-
ved 88 % yields of 4-isopropylbensoyl-2-benzoic acid. The quinone
obtained in the present work had a melting point of 56.5 - 57.00C9
(recrystallized from alcohol) as compared with 450C given in the
literature. The composition and properties of the resulting pro-
duct corresponded to those of isopropylanthraquinone. The quinone

obtained in both the laboratory apparatus and the model plant had
a melting point of 560C and its C and H contents corresponded with
the foxmula C 17H14 020 The use of isopropylanthraquinone as a hy-
drogen transferring agent was studied by hydrogenating the compound
in the presence of a skeletal nickel catalyst until a thick mass
of 2-isopropylanthrahydroquinone was formed. After separation of
the catalyst the product was oxidized with air and the hydrogen
pero-xide formed was removed with water. A similar reaction has
been found to proceed with 2-ethylanthraquinone. In both cases the
melting point of the material recovered corresponded to that of
the original quinoneo There are I figure, 1 table and 2 non-Sov-

Anti-anthrax vaccine STI was found to be reliable propbylactic which confers i=mity
for 10-12 moo However$ in 1950 forced vaccinations with STI were followed by infection
with anthrax and death of some horses and cattle. Weather it time thece infiections
occurred was hot and there was great number of horse flies .~Ohich are assumed to
transmit anthra-6,. Mcroscopic examn of smears from corpses of dead animals disclosed
noncapsular anthrax bacilli in 47.8% of the cases., while such bacilli were present
only in 13% of the cases in corpses of exptl animals infected with initial material.

The following is among dissertiltions of the Leningrad Polytechnic
Institute imeni Kalinin:
"Analysis of Different Systems of Automatic Electric Copying of Draw-
ings." 6 February 1950. Alone with the development of general problems
connected with the copying of drawingss an investigation was made of the
mostiinppAant units of the photoelectric control system. In order to make
a complex investigation of photoelectric systems of copying, a photelectric
copying machine was designed and bullt for processing models of screw pro-
pellers. The basic conditions of a method of calculating the systems of
the impulse control of drives were developed and their characteristics were
f ormed.
