Orig Pub: Khlopkovodstvo, 1957, No 10, 19-22.
Abstract: Transpiration of plants is, according to the Q!ithor,
the basic reason which causes the restoration of
salinity of irrigated soils in cotton fields.
With sustaining of the ground water level at a
shallow depth the maximal utilization of it is pos-
sible by cottor; plants, which gives a possibility
of deoreasing the irrigation norms. Examples are
cited, Tho tauts were conducted on the irrigated
lands with f eq'ual mineralization of the ground wat-
ors (2-8 g/1) In the "Pakhta-Aral" Sovkhoz and in
the Bukhara roSion. -- V. A. Molodtsov.

ABSTRACT%
The equipment of the
"Split" hydropower plant is described in
the article. Each of the four
generating units will be driven
by a Francis turbine, designed for a
flow of 50 ou m per see,
and a head of 250.4 m net (Figures 7, 8).
Each turbine will
be supplied with water by a penstock made of "St 35
DR",
"St 42 DR", and "Aldur 58" steel, 3-5 m internal diameter,
thickness of the wall 10 to 26 mm allowing 1 mm extra for
corrosion.
The equipment of the spillway at the "Praneev16i"
dam consists of two
fish-bellied tilting gates, each 20 m
long and 3-0 m high.. The bottom
outlet of the dam (Figure 2)
is equipped with two tainter gates, 6 x 4
m each; an 8.4 x 5 m
sluice weir can be pluoed before each of them in
a case of re-
pair. Both intake flumes (Figure 3) are equipped with
racks,
each 13 m broad and 11 m high, with a rack rake which cleans

which connect the tunnels with the common surgetanks are also
equipped with sluice gates, 3.7 x 4.2 m, in order to separate
one. tunnel from another when inspection is necessary but con-
tinuous operation of the plant is required. in the valve-
house (Figure 4) each penstock is equipped with a butterfly
valve 3-5 m in diameter and at the end of each penstock, be-
fore the turbine, a ball safety valve is installed (Figure 10).
Two 1,150-kw auxiliary generating units are driven by single-
nozzle Felton wheels and cover the internal needs of the "Split"
hydropowor plant. The underground transformer station (Fi-
gure 9) consists of 7 single-phase 16/121/ V~3-kv, 40-Mva power
transformers, and seven 16/242/V7-kvi 40-Mva power trans-
formers. There are also 4 single-phase open-yard 2311VI"'I
WNT/10-5-ky, 33.3-11va transformers. The power transformers
are connected by oil-filled cables to the switohyard. The
outdoor switchyard, about 105 m broad, and 200 m long.(Fi-
gures Up 12, 13), is designed for 220 and 110-kv transmission
and has standard equipment. The system for linkage with the

connection scheme are illustrated (Figures 5, 6). The plant
is also equipped with direct-control switchboards, remote
control switchboards from outdoor m9in control station, as
well as with various electrical protective devices and com-
munication systems. Grounding is common for all voltages.
Cranes are installed in all rooms where assembly and repair
of equipment is carried out. The total cost of the equipment
installed in the first stage of construction amounts to
5,802 million dinars. A specification of the costs for the
various categories of equipment is given in Table 2.
There are 10 diagrams, 2 tables, 2 maps and 1 schematic
diagram.

ABSTRACT- The casting of crankshafts for the 2000-hp D- 100
Diesel has
been perfected at the Khar'kov Transportation Equipment Plant,
Shafts weighing 1740 and 1490 kg are cast from pig iron of the
following % contents: C 2.2-2.4 and alloy Mo 1. Cr 0.6 and
Ni 1. On rupture, 9 b(tension) >'35 kg/mm7land a b(bending)
> 70 kg/mm?. Utilization of metal when the blank is cast is
close to 475o, while only 14% of the metal can be used in forg-
ing. Horizontal pouring is recommended in single-unit produc-
tion, as inclined and vertical pouring require the construction
of pouring fixtures, although they do increase the yield by 500/0
relative to horizontal and reduce machining to a minimum. The

mixture is poured over the risers. The blanks are heat-treated after
rough-
ing to relieve stress. Gamma - radiaton is used to inspect for
internal faults.

To ellminate some essential technological deficiencies of the cast
crank-
shafts, of which the most important one is the origination of black
spots
as a result of non-metallio sulfide inclusions, investigations were
carried
out in which A. A. Novik, L. D. Dobrynina, S. P. Krivtsov and V. I.
Korea-
kov participated. To increase the productivity in big-lot production
two
crankshafts were cast in one flask of 5,360 x 1,100 x 400 mm,

Magnesium is added in quantities of 0.55% (28 kg per 5 tons of cast

while the cast iron is modified with 1.1 - 1.3P/". (of the weight
of the liquid

modifica-
tion technology and point out that the results of the mechanical
processing
and investigations of mechanical properties have shown that the
addition of
gray cast iron and tl&-.e recasting of the cast iron caused an
increased orig-
ination of black spots. When the cast iron was treated with
orjolite (Of
the grades K1 and K2 TsMTU 952-41) which was added together with
the mag-
nesium, the black spots were eliminated and a stable level of
mechanical
properties was obtained. There are 8 figures and 6 Soviet-bloo
references.

Firstly the basic levels of gastric secretion and of
gastric juice acidity after
feeding 200 g. of meat were established In dogs. Then
peripheral ends of the optic.
acoustic and olfactory analysors were consecutivbly
eliminated. After this operation
the seer tion gradually decreased (at the end of the
3rd month by about 67%). Gas-
tric juic: acidity increased progressively in some dogs
and decreased in others.
The latent period became longer. It was thus clearly
demonstrated that the activity
of the internal organs is dependent upon the functional
state of the cerebral cortex.

ABSTRACT: The Institute "or toT
Tu m
Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the Moscow "Tizpribor" plant
has developed a universal system of pneumatic components to be used
in
indtistrial process-control equiptient. The system comprises
pneumatic
amplifiers, capacitances, resistances, relays and other analogs of
electric and electronic components. All of the pneumatic components
perform simple functions, and are lightweight and small in size. !%ey
are mounted on special switching plates made of plastic material. At
present the Usti-Kaurenga:rsk Plant produces serially 40 different
types
of pneumatic components for use in automatic control systems of
river-
going vessels, The pover supply is air compressed to 1,4 kg/cm2. Thi
range of signals received by the pneumatic-components is from

ABSTRACT; Description of a method for the determination of the
specific
heat of metals in a spherical blending-block calorimeter (BC).
The sperical BC 900 mm in diam is made of Al and equipped
with a special shield which protects it from accidental air
currents and from the radiation of the furnace (F). The small.
pipe F with an electric heati I, unit permits one,to obtain a
maxi-
mum temperature of 80G - 900 C in the inner duct. The upper
part of the F contains a chromel-alumel thermocouple the
junction of which can be introduced into the special cavity of
