It is pointed out that th~i creation of such sciences an cytology, genetics, ecology, aLd physiology have already thrown across a bridge betveen plam~;s and animals. The vmification of the biological sciences im biology- alone is characteristic of the XM century. Abstract [English sL=ary modified] . in rats, 7.6 mg./KS. of uranyl WfG;Ce"7i.p,; 28% of doze in renal tissue 3 hours after adminis" tration. Diethylene pentaacetic acid im-ediatcly after U reduced this to 127. (P=0.05) while hydroxydiphenylether phosphate paradoxically increased it to 55% (P between 0.01 and 0.02.) Latter chelating agent is assumed ineffective as potential therapeutic agent because the U complex fo=ed with it is poorly water-soluble and cannot diffuse. Standard error was 11. 5 - t 14. Structural changes of the greases in (he eleatk~~ ~fielde were determined by the polarization-optical method* The greases atulied were sodium.. calcium and lithiun-bazed soaps thickened with mineral o12; 20.6% Na soap of castor oil acids, 17.5% hydrated Ca soap of cottonseed oil aclds and Card mom- Anna= R M.- OM- M, z W" PXCESSIM. IM: AP4037175 ,technical Li stearate. A double electric layer is known to exist in soap-oil. ..greases on the boundary surface. Its presence is reflected in the dilelec:~ric of the ~jibricaats. The typical soap-oil greases had a sp~cifie resistance of 1010 - 103-4 obm/cm (Li highest, Ca lowest). Upon applyWg a constant electric field., the specific resistance of these system will increase u.' 'th t1ma. Change of the charge sign of the electrodes will cause a sharp drop of aj:eciric :Iresistances These effects were connected vith various manifestations at'the electrodes (e.g. electrolysiso and gas bubbles). As a result of eloctro:lysis water gradually disalrpears from the systemj, affording electrokinetic pbwe change* At the surface of the negative electrode a layer of the dispersion mediu% is formedi Simultaneously the structural framework is compressed at the positive, elr!ctrode andi* the tldc-Jmess of the boundary layer increases with the duration of elect,.-ic field action. A drop of specific resistance occurs as a result of grease 6-efo.,mation. !Upon abrupt stopping of the plastoviscometer-condenserj a sharp cban&v c..' specific ~resistaaae is also registered. Under the Influence of the force of inex,;iao elastJ deformation of the, structural framework takes X place, This =xy ji-M, the Imaterial off the rotor surface* Upon return of this framework., the matts.nial will i I again make contact with tba rotor. The author tells of these researche.3 and of the prospects of their developmento The basic task of Moscow Univerdity is to train specialists. During the last 5 years, 440 of its graduates were assigned to work in agri- culture. Among them were 265 soil scientists working at pre- sent in selection stations, melioration expeditions, s-~ienti- fic-productional agricultural institutions, etc. The ,-reatest work in the field of agriculture is being done by the Depart- ment of Biology and Soil. The importance of the re3eaTch in respect to dividing the USSR into districts according to na- Card 116 tural-historioal aspects is pointed out. This is a great SOV/3-59-4-36/42 The Scientists of the Moscow University - to Agriculture comprehensive work of dividing the country into soil and geobotanical districtsy the oceans and seas according to biological aspects. Ten universities, 5 a&ricultural in- stitutes and academies of sciences of Union republics Darti- cipate in it. The general scientific-methodological giiidance is placed on the Moscow university. The working out of all these problems will permit to issue scientifically based re- commendations for the distributiong specialization and ratio- nal utilization of various branches of agriculture# The 21st CPSU Congress raised the demand for an utmost utilization of soils. But as the arable kolkhoz and sovkhoz land differs in the various natural zoneop it is necessary to register the lands and to determine the prospective productivity of the soil. The basic form of such registration is to draw up large-scale soil maps giving the characteristic of the 5oils and indicating the measures required for raiaine ferti.Aty. In 1958, University scientists completed the collection of field materials in 5 oblasts of the Central Non-Black-:;oil Card 216 Zone and drew up a map of soil districts of all the 11 oblasts SOV/3-59-4-36/42 The Scientists of the Moscow University - to Agriculture of this zone. At present, an analysis of the soils, collected 'by the expedition, is being carried out. The drawing up of a Map of the soil districts of the European part of the U-;SR in a scale of 1 1 lo500#OOO is being completed. Among tile im- :portant works accomplished lately by the Department of Biolo- gy and Soil is the examination of 1-5 million hectares Iof vir- 13in and long-fallow lands in the Kazakh SqR for the purp.ose of aelecting areas for establishing now sovkhozes. This wo'rk was carried out in the Kustanay Oblast in 1958. The scientific irorkers also study the biology of development of corn and me- thoas for its cultivation in the Moscow Oblast . The results proved that corn can be raised under certain condictione even in unfavorable years. In the field of animal husbandry, the research of the Chair of Genetics and Selection has shovin the g~reat practical importance of acclimatizing the Jersey strains of cattle in the Moscow district, and interbraedin,- this kind with those bred in the USSR for the purpoce of obtaining higher yields of milk with a high6r content of fat. The DODartment Card 3/6 of Biology and Soil has also worked out methods for a joint SOV/3-59-4-36/42 The Scientists of the Moscow University - to Agriculture sowing of winter and spring wheat in spring. This method, when applied on the fields of the kolkhozes of the Shche" kovo Dietrictq savee labor in ploughing and resulted in a considerable crop increase. Among other works performed by this department the author mentions soil and geobotanical in- vastigatione of the Kama, Belaya and Vyatka RIver baoins in connection with the planned construction of the Lower Kama Hydroeleotric Power Station. In cooperation with the AS Uj'jR the chairs of the Department have studied the soil of the district between the rivers Zeya and Bureya, where the main agricultural raw material basis of the Far Ea3t is being established. The author also points out the work of the De- partment of Geography* As a result 200 kolkhozes and sov- khozes have been supplied with maps describing the na!.ural and economic conditions of the oblasta. He further mentions the activity of the Economic Department in calculating thq cost price and establishing the profitableness of kolkhozis in the Ryazan' Oblast . In cooperation with othe:- in- stitutions the Chemical Departmen'w has been seekin.,: for means protecting animals from bloodsucking insects Eln3 ticks. Over 300 preparations have been synthesized. One of then - Kyuzol - has successfully passed productional and laboratory teats and been admitted for use on a broad scale. Toots have proved that "Kyuzol" and analogical agents can also I)e used for -protecting domestic animals from blood-aucking flies and. mosquitoes of the diptera order. The TadzhJkdaW% SSR is the only place In the USSR where long-fibered cotton is growing. Cul- tivation of this valuable sort of cotton needs artificial irrigation and for this purpose big and complicated engineer- ing constructions. In this connection the Geological. Depart- ment is studying the sagging and suffusion ("suffoziya") -3he- nomenon which often destroy the constructions and th
